A/C Air Conditioning Compressor Issue

Has anyone had an A/C compressor fail to cycle? My A/C compressor fails to turn on, even though all the circuits seem to be working fine (and the system has a full charge) according to local Ford mechanic. They measured the A/C clutch coil resistance, and said the clutch needed replacing. In looking at the compressor unit, the mechanic mentioned a small copper-colored "button" toward the rear of the compressor (Held in by a screw clip), and said he'd never seen anything like it. It is part of the coil actuator wiring harness. We are not sure what the function of this part is, and if it might be a source of failure? It doesn't seem to be listed as a serviceable part. Does anyone out there know what this part is and what function it may play? Thanks!

Rich, this is becoming a bit of a problem with the a/c set up. Vinyage air made the units and it seems that the actuater in the unit is the culprit. Ask the gtguys but this unit is sealed and theres alot going on it could be a WHOLE DASH REMOVAL AS WE HAVE SEEN 3 times already, hope its not but call the gtguys...p.s. vintage air has an exclusive on the parts .....they are not over the counter from ford.....it could get expensive..good luck GTJOEY1314/CP-1/SONIC BLUE/4 DOOR SONIC BLUE:biggrin

are you sure the pressure switch is working properly? that could be the reason compressor is not kicking on.

"Button" at rear of compressor....

The tech said the clutch coil measured "infinite" and it should measure a few ohms. There was current at the coil connections, but no engagement of the coil so the tech said there was an "open" in the coil. Hopefully, that is the problem. We are both just curious what the clip-retained "button" which is part of the coil engagement circuit on the compressor is. Does anyone know (GT Guys?) what it is?

Question for GTJOEY...

Are you talking about another problem with the air distribution system? Thanks!

The "copper-colored button" in the rear of the compresor is a thermal limiter. It is used to senses the temperature of the compresor housing and open the coil if the temp. goes to high. This is used in a lot of Fords A/C compresors now and is not that unusual to find. I haven't seen one go bad ever to cause this, but an open coil is not that unusual.

A/C Compressor Thermal Limiter

Is this part serviced separately, and does anyone know the Ford or manufacturer's part number?

I left a message for rich from the gt guys to post, hopefully today....Got your pm. There are plastic gears inside the condesor box to open and close the flaps, they have been getting jamned or stripped too, leading to air flow problems. Again its a sealed unit, rich can tell you more. Looked easy when they took THE ENTIRE DASH OUT:eek on my buddies car.....but ummm im thank full they are around. gtjoey...gtjoey1314:thumbsup

Richard is talking about an A/C compresor problem not a problem with air flow from the vents. The motors on the evaporator case do have problems and are made from plastic gears, but his problem is the compresor is not turning on. If the coil on the compresor has power and ground and it is not pulling the clutch in then the coil is probably bad. Its not that unusual. There is a chance that the clutch gap on the compresor is to large and it can't pull the clutch in but this is easly checked by your mechanic.

Chrome Torx Belly Screws/Problem was Open Cluch Coil on Compressor

Problem was open clutch coil on compressor. Resolved successfully, but mechanic took about five hours to accomplish since he'd never worked on a GT before $670.00 bill, including part.

Anyone know the P/N on the chrome colored torx belly pan screws for the polished center belly piece. Two were missing, apparently from the factory but I'm out of warranty. Thanks!
