225.2 mph @ Maxton Mile

It's been a busy last 2 weeks running at both the Texas Mile and Maxton Mile standing mile events. We made it through both events in pretty good shape while learning a lot and got a few new speed records along the way.

In the game of high speed racing there is no substitute for experience and knowing the ropes of where you are racing. This last weekend at Maxton was quite a learning curve. Maxton has mirrored itself after many of the traditions, rules, etc. of Bonneville SCTA.

Although we had successfully run over 200 mph 5 times the weekend before, we were required to make a 175 mph qualifying pass at Maxton. No big deal, we had to play by the rules so that is what we set out to do before trying for a 200+ mph run. The biggest challenge at Maxton is the track surface. One of my guys referred to it as being a "motocross track". I thought it was more along the lines of "rallycross meets bonneville". To say that the course is bumpy, dusty/dirty and downright rough, is a complete understatement. Anybody with a pair and a fast car and go out on a smooth road and hit 200 mph without too much trouble. Maxton is a whole different deal. Imagine the worst road you know of in your home town and then cover it in dust and rocks then picture yourself going out and running 200+ mph on it. Anybody who has gone over 150 mph on this track has got a pair and those running over 200 mph are risking their lives every time they go.

Back to the "qualifying pass". Now that you get an idea of what each driver has to drive on, add in a little chicane at about the 1/8 mile and you better pay attention to where you are going on this track. So our driver heads out to hit a 175 mph pass. At this poing the CC has mirrors and wipers in place and the same plugs we had been dyno'ing on the week prior. We didnt want to mess with all that til it was time to go fast.

So he takes off slowly and short shifts 1st, 2nd and 3rd - and was sideways most of the time with a big rooster tail of dust behind him. He figures that his short shifting and less than agressive driving will have him running much slower so he nails 4th and 5th and the car finally hooks up. He is working hard to keep the car on track and doesnt bother to try to watch the speedo or gps - he is too busy trying to keep on track and not crash.

He ends up going thru the timing lights and runs 223.2 mph on his run where he was supposed to only be running 175 mph. He didnt think he was going very fast and didnt deploy the parachute. Needless to say the officials were not happy with our 50+ mph overage on speed and they really freaked out when we didnt pull the chute. The CC stopped just fine and all was fine after we got a nice butt chewing.

So they still required us to go out and get a qualifying pass. So we headed back out and made another run, this time 5th gear broke. But that did slow us down enough to keep everyone happy. The only problem was we didnt bring a spare transmission and it was late Saturday afternoon.

Part 2 coming in a few.

So our racing was pretty much done for the weekend with a broken trans. late saturday afternoon. I posted on here looking for help and got a quick call from Tony Armour. Dr. Roof also generously offered to help. and i tried calling Kevin from UR but i think he was in FL at the time. So we had some quick offers of help. One of our team members, Brian Smith, who drives the Woodhouse Comp Coupe in World Challenge made a few calls and contacted another CC team Kenny Hawkins Racing, located in Raleigh, NC - only about 2.5 hrs from us. Kenny Hawkins Racing gave us a brand new CC T56 no questions asked - what an incredible help! Kenny - if you are reading this - I will be sending a brand new CC T56 to you ASAP! So Brian drove up to get it and bring it back while my other guys removed the broken T56.

By 1 am the trans. was swapped out and the car was good to go. The next morning we were in line to run. The line to run at maxton is long and does not move very quickly. You would be lucky to get 3 runs in on Sat. and less runs at Sun. So we get up to the starting line and get ready to make another pass. Car takes off and the dirt is flying again, this time worse and its hard to see the CC in the distance from the dirt cloud. So we listen to the radio for the speed and were happy to hear 225 mph! After the run our driver said he thought there was more speed in the car at the same power level but he just felt like he could not put any real power to the pavement til at about 140 mph.

Part 3 coming...

225mph is absolutely amazing. :thumbsup

Don't think anything on 4 wheels can compete with that right now.

GOOD NIGHT NURSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek :eek :eek

The Maxton surface really cannot be believed until it is seen in person. Amazing speed for the track.

Sounds very dangerous, glad nobody got hurt at such high speeds.

A lot of people talk smak, but regardless of anything else, Hennesey delivers.

At this point, its about 11 am on Sunday morning. The event shuts down at 2 pm on Sunday. We consider making another pass but we are not sure if we can improve much on the 225 given the traction issues from the previous 3 runs.

FYI - the road you come to to get to the starting line area - this road is dirt - its about a 1/4 mile long. So you completely bathe your tires and undercarriage in fine dirt just before you get to the starting line!

So we dont plan to make another run unless the SVS Viper gets close or betters our speed. Ron Jr. made his final pass and it didnt threaten our number so we called it a day.

We set a new speed record for the AA/BGT class, new Viper speed record for the event (by 6 mph) and had the fastest speed for a car at the event (by 13 mph). So all in all it was a successful weekend. There are many people who worked hard to make this happen and I will thank them in a few.

Part 4 coming..........

Sounds like Maxton would be a good track to skip!

Congratulations John, you must have done some more tuning between the Texas Mile and Maxton. Don't you think if you went back to the Texas Mile now with the car tuned like it is that you could get an even bigger number?

I didn't see you guys pop the chute in Texas, did you ever use it at Maxton?

i think we can get past 220 mph at goliad into a headwind but not sure if we could hit 225 there into the wind.

we used the chute at both texas mile and maxton mile.

Hayabusa

Sorta make the 250 mph plus Hayabusa all the more impressive (either in performance, guts or stupidity)
