Ford GT 2006 Clutch Replacement Advice Needed

Wow! 90,000 Miles is incredible on a GT! congrats on fully enjoying the car how it was meant to be enjoyed! I'm glad to hear that the clutch can last so long, as it's not particularly cheap to replace (luckily nowhere near as bad as other supercars would be still 😂).

That brings tears of happiness to my eyes🥹

I'll differ somewhat. The clutch works smoothly, as others have said, but I find the engagement point is higher than most. That 's not a big deal after you get used to it. The other difference is that the 1st gear is very tall compared to other manual transmissions. Ford geared it high so that the driver did not need to shift to 2nd to get to 60MPH, and they could get a very fast 0-60 time for advertising and bragging rights. Therefore it takes more slipping to get going in 1st.

I take it easy getting started in 1st, partly to be easy on the clutch, and partly because launching it hard in 1st will result in wheel spin. I save full throttle until 2nd or 3rd and above.

I have over 90,000 miles on my FGT and the clutch is still smooth and locks up firmly. You do not need to order clutch replacement parts anytime soon.
I have no driven the GT shortly before loading it on the trailer to ship to Romania. While I have been heavily warned about the higher bite point and the extra slip needed to get going in first, I still stalled it twice at first cause I wasn't giving enough gas😂. Definitely different then the manuals I've driven before, but otherwise the car felt demonic, and I'm totally terrified (as I should be given then 4.0L Whipple on it). Its always been my poster car, so this is a dream come true...even though I got the CHEAPEST Ford GT in Europe currently for sale, I'm happy to finally own one!

Post some scenic pictures of the GT with different backdrops along Romania countryside. We would like to see.

I've done some incredibly amazing road trips this side through mountain scenery which will make the GT feel at home! I don't know how to attach photos here though😂

... and I'm totally terrified...
After 14 years with mine (pulley/tune), I too am cautious!

And quite a few more over 100k, and even MORE over 75k. These cars are stout.

I bought mine with 17k miles only but it's a track driven 4.0L Whipple with a hit front bumper that was poorly repaired and repainted. This was the only one I could reasonably afford to buy as it was 100K cheaper then the next fully functional alternative 🤣. But man, at this point, I would have done anything to get a Ford GT before they shoot up into lala-land prices and became completely unattainable. It's a dream come true, but it's so stressful to prepare for ownership cause there's so much to learn about what the car will need for general maintenance and wear and tear replacement parts! I'm just thankful to join this Ford GT community as an owner after dreaming about this car for over 15 years😂.

If you do not have one, a transmission cooler will help keep it better. The original Ford Racing cooler is now unobtainium, but Kendall at Cool Tech sells a very nice setup.

Remember the first rule of driving a Ford GT: DO NOT PUNCH IT WITH THE STEERING WHEEL TURNED. The oversteer will do you no good and you will spin the car. A new owner outside of Indianapolis just learned this lesson the hard way.

The only other car that is even less tolerant was my Cobra

I just turned 20K on my GT and noticed a bit a clutch slip on the track a few weeks ago -absolutely amazing track car! Just took it out again this evening and it's getting worse, lots of slip once boost generates. Any recommendations on an OEM v. after market clutch? Vehicle is around 700hp with a power pulley. If the dealer is in there, anything I should think about replacing at the same time? Thanks.

By the looks of it OEM clutch is best for sub 800ish hp and daily driving applications, and spec is slightly less daily driveable but more resilient to high HP. I personally went OEM for replacement because I don't track the car, but id say it's the type of thing you have to test yourself, because what's "driveable" to one is undrivable to others🤣.

Fair point. I just spoke with the dealer and they are showing an available kit. Curious, did you replace your mill your flywheel while it was exposed?

For tranny service the recommendation I got is to change flywheel, slave cylinder, bolts, and pilot bearing when changing the clutch. Basically replace a lot because it's a big job anyway so might aswell have it all be fresh.

I put 76,000 miles on a stock clutch, 770 RWHP 4L Whipple/Borla headers and muffler. Had it custom dyno tuned and clutch took all I could give it.. It never gave out, I did a total go over the car at 76,000 miles. Tires are another story, barely got 5k on each set of Bridgestones (rears) I made custom spacers for wheel alignment as Ford only has 3 choices, easy to spin off on a lathe... One thing I did was change clutch fluid every oil change, easy to do with vacuum bleeder Dot 4 synthetic works great.

Have you asked the dealership if their mechanic has done a GT clutch replacement before? I would say that you just don't want to be the first.

It sounds like we have an identical set up. Ford was able to find OEM parts including the flywheel so I'm going to replace it all while they are in there. Agreed on the tires, I ended up with the Bridgestone Scuderia's and they are performing great. Thanks for the tip on the clutch fluid - smart.

There have also been some bad clutches from Ford in the last 12 months. I second Kendall’s recommendation that you make certain this is not the first clutch job by the Tech.

Agreed. Now the dealer is saying the clutch assembly is on backorder but all other parts came in. Any thoughts on suppliers for OEM or a reliable after market clutch assembly? Thanks for the feedback on this string.
