For what it's worth, The ZR1 does, or at least did if something has changed, get hit with the GGT.
I guess I should buy a Z06 instead of a F458 too.
Not only was that time almost 2 seconds per lap faster than the second-fastest car (the Ferrari 458 Italia, 1:36.20) but the
505-hp Z06 had less power than the second- through fifth-place cars (458, Audi R8 GT, Lexus LFA, Nissan GT-R).

...if the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ involved in both the purchase price and the upkeep vs. the performance level of both cars have any bearing on the decision - you darned betcha.
Around a track. Look at straight line performance numbers. 0 to 60 3 secs flat for 458 10.9s 1/4 mile time compared to 11.4s for Zr1 0 to 60 times 3.4 ect. But who cares about that buy what want....get the z.
Vettes don't carry a gaz guzzler tax
Except that the Z's small block 427 has an issue that is plaguing quite a few owners now...the premature valve guide wear issue, resulting in blown engines left right and center...it's all over the Z06 boards...and one thread has over 1400 posts in it. Even mine is now starting to tick...with only 45k km's on the clock. Other than that, hard act to follow and you can get 'em for nothing these days....if the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ involved in both the purchase price and the upkeep vs. the performance level of both cars have any bearing on the decision - you darned betcha.

The fact remains that these runs were done in bone stock cars and comparatively speaking (same driver, same track. etc...), the ZR1 was dramatically faster than the Viper, back then and still today. Adding another 40 HP /changing gearing and losing 100 LBS, would not necessarily shave .25 seconds off a 1/4 mile time. It could, or it could not. Please don't count the Jamie Furman type 1/4 mile run times as realistic. These are private track rentals where you choose how much glue (yes glue and what type is laid down), vht and how the track is prepped. Also, almost every "record" is done at the same track....hmmm, wonder why? Want reality, show up to a bracket race at your local track with normal track prep and a good driver.
The new Viper is just as fast as the ZR1 in a straight line. Sport Cups are faster than the Corsas. You really need good brakes at Laguna Seca and if the Vipers were fading, it will hurt the time. Also, as Randy Probst quoted he did not feel confident in the car. Going through turn one at 138 mph, I too would feel timid if the car didn't feel right. It could be as simple as the toe was wrong front or rear or both. That is no excuse, but I'm guessing the car will come back and shave at least 1 to 1.5 seconds off the time. Still, the car is faster than the 458 and other mega exotics. If everything is sorted out (brakes and suspension) I would expect the Viper to be within 1 second of the ZR1 if it has to stay on the Corsas. If it can beat the new ZR1 record, that would be incredible since it did it without the crazy aero the Gen 4 ACR used. The new Gen 5 does have much better gearing and trans ratios for the track than the older Gen 3 and Gen 4's.
The one place the Viper "X" factor will pay off is the ability to run track sessions in high heat conditions that would heat sink or overheat boosted cars. It really is hard to hurt the Viper motor, so for guys that like to play on the track, it does stay pretty reliable. I would assume the Gen 5 engine will be similar, it will be interesting to see how the brakes hold up compared to the Gen 4 ACR package. Lots of cars can run two or three fast laps but then the coolant gets hot, oil temps soar or the brakes fade away. Hopefully they can tune the new Vipers brakes and suspension to be as reliable as the Gen 4 ACR....hopefully better.
There is a total meltdown going on at the VCA regarding the ZR1 vs Viper Motor Trend outcome. I've said it there and I'll say it here, you never ask a question without knowing the answer. Somehow SRT was not prepared or the car is not just right yet. Blaming the driver is the wrong thing to do.
They should take a lesson from their Ferrari big brother and always have a tech engineer on hand for all these types of tests to make sure the car is at least running correctly, set up right, etc. Hopefully they get their act together, come back to Laguna Seca and knock down a great time to help validate what the car might actually be able to do.
Cheers,
George
It is a spec issue; bad batch of guides according to many in the know and you're right, if you make the changes before the problem occurs, cost is marginal. But once the damage is done, you need a new motor @ 18k+ , which I suppose is peanuts against a new 458 power plant...LOL That said, many of these motors have blown with no signs of it about to happen.I hadn't heard about that issue...but, admittedly, I don't keep up on stuff like that these days. Regardless, a 'guide job on a SBC runs how much? The same redo on a 458 runs...? And that'd probably occur sometime after you'd paid for how many "factory required" dealer maintenance visits? I'd wager ONE of those F-car dealer visits would make a valve job on a SBC look like parking meter money.
I wonder why the 'guides on the 427 puke??? It's certainly not been an issue with the other 'mice'.
