Got a rock chip in my wife's X5, and State Farm wouldn't cover the repair (they used to just pay for the repair)

Last time I had a windshield repair, I remember thinking to myself, "I could do that."

So, decided to drop by Kragen and find out. Picked up a $9.99 kit, the only one they had.

Used the included push pin to clean out the fragments, cleaned it up.

Then attached the base with included adhesive, injected the resin, cured it in the sunlight, and voila!

Magic?

Not quite magic. It doesn't vanish, but the size was noticeably reduced, and the darkness and veins were just about gone. Plus, the crack shouldn't spread, so I think it met my expectations.

Way to DIY! Good job

When I have had it done I saw the guy use a special coned grinder that he smoothed the hole/crack with. Great Job Randy...

I believe a standard dremel ($45) with the proper carbide tip (about $1) will work.

When I saw them do it before, they used a special UV light. I used the sun (free).

Ya...one actually has that option...in some parts of the country...:bored

EP, I know none of your cars will ever get a rock chip, but if your wife's car gets a chip you can repair it in the garage and use a UV light. just have to move one of your garage queens out in the rain for a little while.

I believe the Pros have a device that will pull a vacuum on the windshield/chip/crack and upon release of the resin, it all gets pushed/sucked into the void in the glass.

good job over there.

Ackshully, wise guy :tongue, I prefer to have a pro do it. As Mardyn pointed out, the "pros" use a vac device that causes the resin to be sucked back into the cracks/voids more completely. So, USUALLY doing the job with the vac tool produces a better looking repair.

As I see it, 'not much sense in buying any kind of kit to keep on hand 'cause, by the time I needed it, the chemicals would probably be useless anyway.

The syringe actually created a nice suction, I could tell when I was pulling up on the handle, and also when I pulled the syringe away from the sealed base, to apply the two stages of pressure.

The technology seems similar, but for $9.99 all inclusive, the small syringe is probably not going to be capable of the same levels of pressure.

Wife called me today and was raving about how much better it was, so it passed the wife test.

Hopefully this is not a procedure any of us will have to use on our GT's.

EP I bet you could suck hard enough on that nipple to create a vacuum.

That's my thought too, Randy. But, hey, this kit DID work well for you this time around!

Wife called me today and was raving about how much better it was, so it passed the wife test.

That's all that matters!!!!!!!!! 'Cause, if MAMA's not happy...nooooooobuddy is happy!

Hopefully this is not a procedure any of us will have to use on our GT's.

Amen to that...:ack

Great fix :thumbsup

Another tip is to light a match and hold it to the glass on the inside for a few seconds to heat up the liquid and help disperse it through the cracks, it ain't vacuum but it sure works.

:cheers
