Mullet's Texas Mile update thread

Mine popped open at 80 mph once and scared the Bejesus out of me. I can't imagine it coming open at 221...:eek

just think if that $17000 clamshell would have been torn off......(insert bitter beer faced Kumar here).

:rofl

There about 24000 right now LOL 17000 is dealer cost.

That must've been someone else.

only one side of the clamshell popped open on me

i couldnt tell if the clicking noise when i shifted was the clamshell or a rod going through the block so i just kept going.

A special picture for Frank.

Dr. Frank Pikul always enjoys some good Ford GT event photos. Here I am helping Speed Babe (Ms. Apollo) into her red GT. Always happy to help out a fellow racer!

Coming open at 300+ MPH.

Texas,

I had a similar experience at over 300 MPH. While doing a low pass upon arrival at Hamilton, Montana, the outer door skin with the plexiglass window attached to it delaminated and was sucked right off my pilots door. It felt like a bomb went off and I thought I had had a mid-air collision. The wind turbulance was incredible and virtually everything flew out of the open door except me as I was strapped in. I got the plane on the ground and it took 2 months to get parts and fly in a tech to make repairs.

A clamshell blowing off a Ford GT at over 200 mph would be a pretty violent event. It actually happened to a Ford GT racing at LeMans in the 60s.

It's good to know those hooks work at high speed!
