IHMO, most cars would have suffered a similar fate.

But I would agree than in many cases a more robust car would have the occupants left unscathed, were they would be in morg if in a DUMB CAR!
 
That wheel does not look like a Smart Car wheel....and aren't Smarts plastic? Appears to be crumpled metal. :confused
 
A couple years ago, BONY (may he rest in peace) sent me about 1/2 doz photos of a "head on" between a Smart car and a single axle delivery truck (in New Zealand, I believe it was). 'Literally cut the S.C.'s driver in half.

There is NOOOOOO WAAAAAY anybody should drive wunna those on anything but a surface street. PERIOD. (And yet I've seen a few being driven on I-5 at 60-70 mph in heavy traffic.:eek:ack:thumbsdow)
 
EP you could buy one and be completely safe if you drive in the same way as your other cars!

Aaaaaaaaaaaah, 'tis pbly true, exaulted one. But then, Pockets IS "the exception to the rule" in soooo many situations...isn't he. :tongue

I saw those photos and beyond sickening they were!
 
I have a Smart FourTwo convertible and around town it is just the best car I have had in a long time. In regard to safety, you do tend to get a little more cautious and observant when it come to being around busses and trucks, but actually I feel pretty safe in my Smart.

It's probably true that one IS "safer" driving around town in a Smart than on a motorcycle...by about thaaaaaaaat much. Regardless, the thought of riding around in ANY "mini-car" rattles the bejeebers outta me.

Buuuuuut, you hafta remember that Pockets is your basic "gutless wonder" anyway... :willy:willy:willy

Prob not a smart car! Smart cars have 3 wheel bolts only

But actually smart cars are very rigid in crash tests! As Top gear showed a few years back!

I have been analyzing automobile accidents for about 30 years. I watched crash testing of the Smart Car for almost ten years before I bought my Smart For2. I now have 15,000 miles on it and even drove it back and forth to Las Vegas (from the Santa Barbara area).

While it is generally true that the heavier your vehicle, the better off you'll be in a collision, the fact is, if you hit or are hit by something SUBSTANTIALLY heavier than your vehicle you are likely to lose, even if you are in the safest vehicle on the road. The only vehicle I'm aware of that would have done well in the pictured collision would have been an Abrams Tank....

The structure of the Smart is very robust. It is fun to drive, in a quirky kind of way. It will cruise all day at 90 mph getting 32 mpg or slow it down to 70-75 and get 42 mpg. You can park it just about anywhere. I also upgraded to the Smart/Kenwood sound system/gps. I'll tell you 500 watts in a Smart car is more than my old ears can handle....

mine is the Cdi version. gets about 60 mpg on average. not the fastest car in the world but really fun and very practical in the city. Also, never problems finding parking space like I was used to with the F150 crew I used to take in to town.

So true. However most everything on the road is heavier than a Smart Car except pedestrians, bicycles, or motorcycles. :ack

It might be a wee bit heavier, but I would rather be in a Smart car than any motorcycle if those two collided.
 
And if you kill the battery you can boost it with your ipod :biggrin
