What you need to know before you pull up next to a ZR1

I know car nuts will know a ZR1 from another new Vette but no one else really will. However, no one mistakes a GT for any other car when they see it!

When describing:
You have a Ford GT? What year Mustang?

When seen:
What is that.....a Lamborghini?
Cool Ferrari!
Ford made that?
:lol

Who cares if the ZR1 is faster. Prowler hit the nail on the head. +1.

As time goes by there will undoubtledly be faster cars that come down the pipeline from various manufactures from time to time. So what.

None of them will be "Ford GTs" and very few of them will have or attain the iconic status that the FGT already occupies.

Corvettes are a dime a dozen. The ZR1 is a nice car but does nothing for me. Putting the ZR1 prodigous power aside, and any car can be made more powerful via many avenues, where does it even compare to a FGT? The mystic of the FGT goes way beyond its performance. It has soul, its decended from legendary DNA and is itself a legend even in its own time.

What you need to know before you pull up next to a ZR1.......is that the owner of the ZR1 will look over and say to himself, "Man....I wish I had one of those" and that the owner of the Ford GT will say to himself, "One of those wouldn't be bad as a second sports car to use as a knock around daily driver". :biggrin

+1000000000. I'm ready for a ZR1 as a daily driver but not about to be stupid enough pay over MSRP. I guess I'll have to wait a few months for the prices to come down. Jetstream Blue w/ those bling bling chrome wheels would do the trick. :banana

ZR1 Brake Package

Let me know if you need me to check on your car while it's stuck here in Houston. ;-)

Seriously guys...I'm one of the biggest Corvette fans on here, but obviously the GT is a more desirable, more exotic, rarer car. Does this even need to be stated anymore?

The ZR1's main advantage over the Z06 will be in day to day drivability, since it has the magnetorheological shocks that I wish the Z06 did. That, and the CC brakes are probably the only advantages that it has over both the FGT and Z06.

Kumar, it does have the same 3.42 rear gear, but all six ratios are different, from a 2.29 1st to a much shorter 5th and 6th compared to other Vettes....hence the 20 mpg hwy rating and resultant gas guzzler tax. Redline is also 500 rpm less than the Z06.

Dealer cost per wheel for the ZR1 complete brake redo is around $5,000. Total brake job= $20,000.

At that rate, there will be a lot of ZR1's for sale when it's time for their first brake job!

That might be because of the cost of the carbon ceramic rotors. I've got those on my Porsche as well. They're great, and have a lifetime expectancy of 180,000 MILES!!! OTOH, if they were to chip, yes they're freaky expensive to replace. Pads are not significantly more than normal (for steel disc) pads.

Carry on.

AND, one has to be r-e-a-l-l-y careful as to what's used to WASH around the things too boot. 'Ceramic absorbes darn near ANYTHING, so "wheel cleaners" of any kind are OUT. And ya gotta make SURE you put a protective "shield" of some kind over 'em when taking wheels off or putting 'em on. Like 'fly mentioned, if one gets CHIPPED ...................:ack

But on the plus side, the ceramics have ZERO brake dust. Well, maybe not ZERO, but I've never seen any on my 911, so pretty darn close to zero. So that parts good. But when you wash your car with soap, you've got to tap the brakes to clear them as they're a little 'slippier' (is that a word? :lol) the first time you go to stop after they've had some soap on em........:eek

And oh my gawd I'm careful changing wheels. I don't have a protective sheild, but I do have (and religiously use) TWO of those wheel stud hangars that Porsche supplies (of course the P-car uses wheel BOLTS not wheel NUTS to fasten the wheels). But if one of the rotors were to get chipped, like EP says, :ack:ack:ack:ack

I think I'd just hose off the wheels & rotors real well and then roll the car fwd or backwards a bit while I blew the water off the wheels/rotors with HP air B4 I drove the thing.

The many of the PCA guys have removed them for track use, swapping to a steel rotor. The more aggressive track pads I guess are not playing well, wear wise on some of these. Or maybe it's the thought of a small stone getting lodged between the pad rotor.

I have never checked, can these be turned or cleaned up if they were to get grooves?

You mean IF you ever drove the thing! :lol

(for you new members that don't know about EP's conservation of his GT please search past threads)
