Some sort of standby electronics? The various memory devices? or maybe the keyless entry circuitry?

What exactly is driving the need to use the battery tender?

I would guess the thought that the FGT is typically driven less than once per week by most people... more likely less frequent than that.
If i don't drive my Audi or NSX it's the same deal.. dead battery after a couple weeks..

I've owned my GT for five years now, never used a battery tender, original battery still in use. Car gets driven on average over the five years every three weeks I'd say. Just turned 18,000 miles.
I must say, however, I am thinking it's time to replace the battery just to be ahead of an unconvenient failure...

I use them on 8 cars, with getting my GT out 2-3 times a year, I would be owning stock in a battery company without them. Work perfectly. It's a trickle technology. You either belive in the electromagnetic theory or you don't.

There is a product called Priority Start, that corvette guys use on Optimas
It's a cigarette box size module w/ post, that attaches to side of battery; with chip that monitors drain.
If voltage drops below 13.8v it cuts off circuit. Leaves enough power to restart.
When you step on brake pedal, brake lights reset circuit.
It's about $70 at their site or Amazon and the guys on Corvette Forum use on Optima red tops, so don't see why we can't.

To the original question, the Macintosh audio draws a lot of milliamps when the car is off. It is the number one draw, number two is the climate control system. The cars with the base audio need the trickle charge less.
