Thinking about a GT

I am thinking about getting a new GT,however,I know very little about the car.
I have had 5 911TTs(including a 997TT).They have been great cars but I am getting interested in something more exotic or exciting.
Am I crazy to think of getting rid of the 997TT in exchange for a GT?Don't get me wrong the 997TT is a great car but maybe just to bland for my taste.
What about problems with the GT? anything that requires constant trips to the dealer?
Speaking of that do most dealers know how to repair the GT without screwing it up? Any of you had problems with someone in the service department taking your GT out for an unauthorized joy ride?

You won't regret getting a GT, but it's pretty different than a 997. The Porsche is a car I would never feel bad about driving in the rain or winter, but the GT is too nice for that. The Porsche is pretty much at its development limit for HP, whereas the GT is capable of much more power with fairly simple mods. There's nothing like big HP and big torque!! The only thing I could compare the GT to was the time I got a ride in an original AC 427 Cobra that had raced at Le Mans.

I sold my 997 after I got my red 2006 GT because it was never going to get driven anymore and I hate seeing cars sit gathering dust. Anyway since you're new to the site spend a few days reading some of the pages of the site. There's a lot to see. You won't see it all but you'll get some flava.

I love my GT and can't see ever getting tired or bored with it.
As far as service goes....it's not even close to a deal breaker but I have had a few problems. In shopping for a new dealer, I'm finding not all service mgrs. even want the car.

I too am still a "spectator" but finding this site was one of thee best things I could have hoped to find, out there, with information on the Ford GT. Yes indeed......do read as much/many of the topics in this Forum as you can. Some of the best advice, info., and encouragement from a stellar bunch of owners. I mean it!

ALWAYS there to help and answer your questions regardless if you are an owner or not. I can not wait to join the ranks of "owner". The car makes my heart hurt. Good luck in your quest, I'm sure we'll both be VERY happy we bought a GT!

Being a former modified 996TT owner, I can say this car offers a more enjoyable driving experience. Porsche turbos are very mod friendly, and can easily make 800+ HP, but at a much higher price with less reliability.
The GT can make over 1000RWHP on the stock block with no internal work. While I won't go that crazy with the power, it's nice to know it can handle it.
I loved my TT, and I am actually looking at another one right now. Totally different driving experience.
I prefer Rear Wheel Drive, so the GT better suits me. For my next Porsche, I will have the Front gears pulled so it drives more like a GT2, or I may go with a newer GT2.
You will not regret it, but since there are more used ones on the market now, you may be able test drive one, so I would recommend doing that.
I bought mine without even sitting in one, and I have not looked back! :biggrin
 
Porsche is a great car. As a friend once put it going from a car like the 997 to a GT is like loosing your high school sweetheart and being stuck with going out with a supermodel instead. Believe me when I say she is going to be ALOT more than just pretty :banana Going out with a supermodel has its down side though. Your going to followed and asked questions of what it is like constantly. You won't be able to leave her side to often unless she is secured from the public and no matter how you dress her there will be nothing stealth about her. It will be almost impossible to leave her side when you go out especially if you are the jealous type like me and don't want people touching her. People congregate around it like flies to !??!?!??!? and want to take pictures of her and some times they even try to touch her without your permission. The nice thing about the Porsche is that you can take it anywhere any time. Be somewhat stealthy and you won't get bugged to bad. You can fit more than yourself in it. The GT has only one purpose to her. Experiencing driving nirvana and attracting attention. The tt is more practicle, fast and stealthy.

My 996tt was in the shop all the time. The GT has been in once.... for an oil change.

Took the wife to a very nice restaurant last weekend. The valet told us to park the GT ourselves right in front. "Sir, can you park it right over there? We just don't want the responsibility but please leave the keys for fire safety reasons".
Our table offered great views which included the valet parking area........ Soooooo after watching the 4th "in seat photo-opp tour" complete with "rolled down windows and thumbs up cel-camera action smiles" it was time to retrieve the keys. :bored

Hello Mike,

I went from a 2001 M5 (395.5 rwhp dyno). I had thought about the 997 GT3 and GT3RS for a long long time. But after I saw and researched the Ford GT, I knew that I would have to have it. Whatever I got, I wanted it to be a driver's car, first and foremost. The simplicity of the GT was an attraction for me.

I have a Porsche GT2 that I love that I bought new in 2002, its a great car but I agree that it is not a GT! Both cars have their positives, but I think the GT is better looking, just as fast if not faster stock than the Porsche and is more fun to drive. If I had to sell one the Porsche would have to go.
 
I agree with earlier posts. No doubt that the Porsche 997TT is a great car. I strongly considered it prior to my purchase of the GT. Test drove many cars including the GT X2, 2004 F360 Spider, 2006 Lambo Gallardo E-gear, C6 Z06, etc. The test drives helped move me toward the GT. I could not believe that a car with this much power was so easy to drive, especially after having a vette. But the downside is that the GT is NOT a practical, every day car...virtually no luggage space and attracts way too much attention. My issue with the Porsche was that, like the Z06 (from a regular C6), only an enthusiast will be able to tell the difference between a 997TT and a 997 non-T or even virtually any 996 model. Plus, in my parking lot at work are numerous Porsches! Their everyday driveability and availability are their strengths and weaknesses. You just blend in. Regarding service, my local dealer has been as good if not better than the local Porsche dealer (I have a 2005 Cayenne Turbo as well). The Ford dealer has SVT mechanics on site who handle my GT with the upmost care. I had an airconditioner problem early on...without any prompting from my part, they just replaced the whole thing!
Absolutely no regrets!!
