Guys, I was thinking of replacing the half shaft bolts myself ,while the car is stuck in the garage due to snow. There is a release form that you can sign from Ford allowing you to get the parts thru the warranty system and install them yourself. My question is, Is this as simple a job as it sounds?

John

Hope you've got some really long extensions. Torquing the six outside axle bolts is what takes the time. You could probably do it yourself much easier if you saw it done once.

One thing that comes to mind when you mentioned the extensions, the torque will not be correct....right?

I have not done the swap yet so I don't know if its even possible to get a torque wrench in there with out extensions.

The letter from Ford regarding the bolt upgrade addresses the "release form" issue. Have you gotten that letter yet?

As best I remember, all 'Forum members who have done the job themselves have indicated it was simple to do.

Torque should be the same with extensions. My suggestion is to do the driver side first, there's more room than on the passsenger side. The Ford TSB does not mention taking off the belly pan/diffuser, but if you drop something, it will probably have to come off anyhow. Also gives you more room for the torque wrench. You will need a very long (3 foot or so) pry bar.

Not true; there's formulae for varying extension lenghts and widths.

Does anyone know what the torque specs are for the two 8mm axle bolts as well as the 6 T50 CV joint bolts? I heard that there is a odd 2 step procedure for the CV joint, something like torgue to some number then loosen up torgue to another lower number then give it a extra turn.

Thanks

John

John, The FIRST TSB can be found here:

TSB #4 in Centerpucnhes first post.

I haven't seeen the new instruction on line yet and there is a set. When the tech changed mine though he tightened using a star pattern not circular as described in the TSB above....

Good luck and take your time..

Thanks for all the help, I have both side disassembled and will finish the job over the next few days.

Hi John

You have the hard part completed

I suggest that you not use extensions but rather remove the air box and then you can torque the bolts with no concern with torque variances caused by the extension

Let me know if I can offer any assistance

Thanks for the hint, with the air box removed it was a piece of cake!!!! It was a bit strange to torgue the outer half shaft bolts with the recommended procedure. As it turns out the 90 degree turn after re-torqueing was as tight as I could make it.

Thanks again

John
