Jesus! This looks like you had better be at the top of your game to keep this from getting away from you. Flies like a weapon.

I think weapon it could become. No longer do you need to be a first rate power to have potential cheap and easy to use UAVs. Combine this with Google earth and well you get the idea. I also think this could have some issues with the FAA. I can't imagine how a mid-air with that thing would go over especially in a light civil aircraft.

The same could be said of many prop driven model aircraft as well, but, you're right - this puppy would be worse. And it definately could ring in a whole new world for UBL's boys. A little C4 in one of 'em combined with its speed and difficulty of TIMELY detection, and they'd have a cheap 'S.A.M.' to use on whatever they wished - airliners, cars, buildings, whatever.

But, just considering public safety in the general sense, how does the 'pilot' of one of these things know exactly where the darn thing IS at all times w/o a nose camera/monitor?! Even the camera man 'filming' this vid couldn't find the thing all the time! :willy:willy:willy

In the UAV world which I have become intimate with in the past 9 months, you would need a Ground Control Station to Autopilot, Track and Retrieve. For now Autopilot technology for any Aircraft is still considered a National Asset and the State Department frowns on exporting that specific component. I agree in general though that UAVs are the next technological wave....

May be I should Trademark iUAV before someone calls the UAV his invention....:willy:willy:willy

Gentlemen,

At a speed of .6 Mach this little R/C plane is still a lot slower than some missiles that exceed Mach 5. But with some improvement and an increase in speed to .9 Mach it would effectively outrun it's own sound signature (at the target) and unlike a missile this little jet leaves no smoke trail so it's invisible until it's past you. Judging from the length of time this plane was up it could cover a good 20+ miles to a target if autopilot/GPS was available to guide it. I hope this mini-jet technology remains confined to the R/C hobby world.

One wouldn't actually need AP/GPS if the plane had a nose camera installed and a monitor on the control unit, would he? The plane could then just be flown "IFR", as they say (I follow road). The range of the plane would be limited by its fuel capacity anyway...so, it's my GUESS that GPS, etc., really wouldn't be of any additional, practical, benefit. Just piloting the plane via the camera for what would, of necessity, be short distance runs to target ought to work adequately enough for a terrorist's purposes, I would think.

Buuuuuut, that's just my take on it...

I agree but this thing is definitely taking the RC world to a completely new level and as Chip pointed out a slight increase in speed and this thing could even be more amazing. It actually makes some of the UAVs I saw in the military look second rate. Unfortunately like all technology once you open Pandora's box there isn't any going back. I also wondered how the guy controlling that thing kept track of it?

His biggest issue will be FAA and interfering with Commercial Flight Paths, at least here in the US. The FAA has been recently tasked to differentiate between a UAV and an RC as the guide lines are marginal. And most commercial UAV cameras are now Differential GPS enabled.

Small chance of that! I don't think it will be long before this will be added to the scumbags toolkit!
