Made it home safely, barely... Noticed this when I pulled in the driveway last night:

I had one let loose as well! It was on my last night about 6 hours from home. I was about to stop driving for the night so it ended my night a little early...

changing a tire on the side of the road is never any fun. Especially at night in Florida next to a body of freshwater. I kept turning around, checking for Gators and I was getting bit up by what I thought was nasty mosquitoes. I had some nasty red sores the next day.. turned out I was getting bit by fire ants!

That sux! Did you hit something? I put brand new tires on before the trip, good ones at that and still had a failure. Any suggestions to prevent this? They were radials and properly inflated.

Goodyear Marathon! How did I know?

Trailer came with them, and like an idiot I kept buying more. Seven of eight failed. The last is a spare.

After getting rid of the Goodyears, no flats in 12k miles.

You don't want radials. You want stiff walled bias ply trailer tires to reduce sway and improve straight line tracking.

Stay away from Goodyear Marathons.

No problems with Carlisles, although others have reported flats.

Inflate to max cold pressure. 50 LR C, 65 LR D.

Most ST trailer tires are speed rated to 65 mph.

FlorIdaho Chris told me about a new Goodyear. Endurance, LR D, ST but with N speed rating (87 mph), and made in USA. In spite of my bad experience with Goodyear, I will try these next.

They are actually radial trailer tires. Paid extra for them, and still had a problem!
Rated for 81mph

Ok...yeah I was going to edit my post above to say you don't want radials unless specifically made for trailers.

Still, my trailer guru (Chuck, The Trailer Guy) recommends bias ply over radials. Trailers are his business and he's seen everything.

I think the only reason to use radials is if you want to maximize tread life. But, unless you are trailering continuously, your tires will need replacing from age long before the tread is worn out.

No matter what you get, it seems that trailer tires are a lot more troublesome than car tires.

Two spares recommended!

EDIT: Wow, those are tiny tires. I have 205-14s and I wish I had 15s, but no room. Chip had his Trailex modded to run 15s.

I agree with all of your points, especially two spares. The weather was so bad, I didn't realize I lost the tire. Had I not been so close to home, I would have had two flats before I realized it.
I ran over a ratchet strap, I think that is what got me.
We need to move this to a trailer tire thread.
Hijack over.

Ford GT rally threads being about trailer tires is not a hijack; it's a tradition.

Yeah they were the original tires. Checked out the date codes there now three years old... I just got my trailer in 2015. I ordered some cooper tires.. what are you using now?

I know of one other forum member that lost a trailer tire on the way home.

Maybe it was going from higher elevation to lower, maybe a temperature change, actually all were going west to east...............hmmm, could there be a common cause? :wink

Here we go again... The common denominator was Stormcat's potato chips.
