are board members allowed to post links to GT's for sale to solicit board member feedback & knowledge about a specific GT that is on the market?

this is quite common on several boards in which i am a member. but before I post, i thought I would ask.

given the small number of GT's manufactured, this is a pretty small community and board members might provide valuable feedback to prospective buyers.

please let me know this board's rules on this topic.

thanks.

GT Forum Rules.

Only Subscribing members can advertise a car for sale. Posting links to ad's is not allowed unless a subscribing member is posting a link to his own car. When you say "board member" I assume you are referring to Forum Members. If you have any more questions please feel free to send me a PM.

Chip: let me clarify so there are no ambiguities.

let's say I see an ad for a GT on a car dealer's website or eBay that I am interested in purchasing. may i post a link to that ad asking forum members to tell me what they might know about that particular car?

or would it be more appropriate to post the VIN number only and ask if any forum members might know about the vehicle?

or are neither allowed on the bulletin board?

in other words, i would not be trying to advertise for the seller -- i would be using the link to the ad to see if any forum member had knowledge about the car being sold so i could know some background on the car before i sought to buy it.

does this help clarify what i had in mind? if so, let me know if this is appropriate.

Let me first just say that the Board rules are what they are and we all need to respect them. However, the internet is a tool that 99% of the general populous is familiar with and if someone posts a link about a certain GT or any other car for that matter should not be a secret.

I have personally helped 5 different GT owners acquire their dream car and when I help, I do it for the shear enjoyment and for no financial rewards whatsoever. Recently, I helped a fellow by the name of Craig acquire a GT from a forum supporting vendor in Fresno, I helped with the negotiation, the PPI and I even used my truck and trailer to go get it for him. Why, may be because I'm a bit crazy or have a lot of time on my hands or may be, just maybe I get the same new GT acquisition thrill even when its done for others that are complete strangers.

This forum is awesome because of the quality of people that own these GTs but lets not be too paranoid about what links gets posted, unless of course its about politics and then you get banned...

Sam could you assist me in finding a new BMW? :lol

Forum policy.

Chip,

Let me clarify so there are no ambiguities.

Or would it be more appropriate to post the VIN number only and ask if any forum members might know about the vehicle?

Tmctguer,

I did not write the Forum policy regarding these matters, but I find the policy to be sound and it has worked well for our membership.

What you are asking to do does violate Forum policy for the following reasons. Subscribing Members and Supporting Vendors have paid for the privilege of being able to advertise on this site. Many times in the past under the guise of "research", links have been posted to Auto Trader and eBay ads. They have all been deleted. On a weekly basis I also delete advertisements and promotional posts submitted by non-subscribing members.

Some of these posts are legitimately seeking information. But a large percentage of them are also seeking a backdoor way to advertise a vehicle on the Forum.

I cannot divine intent, so posting links to advertisements unless that link is posted by subscribing member for his personal car is not allowed for any reason.

The Ford GT ownership fraternity is quite small and huge percentage of that group are members here. If a member had a car advertised, and a spectator posted a link wanting to know how that car was driven, was it wrecked, has it had mechanical problems? Would you like our membership to post up and say, "Yeah, Chip Beck drove like a maniac and wrecked that car twice, he's had two engines in the thing and I think the transmission is questionable."

Such posts would be destructive to the good fellowship that is the norm here. If you want to know everything there is to know about a car that you are looking at, you need to get a prepurchase inspection by a qualified GT technician. Everything else is merely hearsay. And just because a GT Forum member had not heard about a particular car being wrecked, doesn't mean that it hasn't been wrecked. Even if such posts were allowed, garnering information by asking for it on an Internet forum would be hit or miss and most incomplete. I would never consider buying a car as expensive as a Ford GT by "asking around" about it. When somebody like Rich Brooks (GT Guys) gives you an opinion after inspecting the car, you can take his opinion to the bank.

Only an owner can disclose information or photographs on this Forum about damage to his own car. Only a subscribing member or supporting vendor can post links to an advertisement for products they are selling.

That's not what you want to hear but those of the Forum rules and until DBK changes them, they will be enforced.

I think the headlights are nice, but Bony would prefer larger units. :biggrin

The title proper board "etiquette" threw me off in that I originally thought it had to do with Franks and my postings while drunk.....:cheers

Yeah, it's him.

Bony?? Is that you??

Here's something else you can take to the bank. He's still here, lurking on this Forum every day. And the content of his character still guides this fraternity. God bless America.

Chip: thanks for your reply. That is why I asked before I posted a link to a GT for sale. It doesn't help getting on the wrong side of a bulletin board moderator.

But I beg to differ with you on the value of "hearsay" for cars, high end or otherwise. Given the low production volume of GT's, and the amount of GT's for sale at any given time, it is possible that one could learn from a forum member who may have owned the car, may have inspected the car themselves, or may know a previous owner of the vehicle. This is quite frequent on Porsche and Alfa Romeo boards I frequent, and I suspect many others too.

But I wholeheartedly agree that nothing beats a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified expert. Even PPI's aren't fool proof, but they are sure is better than a fool buying a car "blind".

Do your own due diligence. Do a PPI. Contact the Ford dealer that performed service work on the GT in question. Get a carfax. If you cannot attain the information from the seller, then move on to another GT for sale. Is the seller a forum member? Call one of the supporting vendors. There are plenty of GT's for sale on the open market.

Then. Buy the car. Purchase the forum subscription. You will not be disappointed.

Unless you need a specific rare color with low miles. :skep

If you are flexible on color, the statement is accurate. :wink
