I try to attach a photo to respond to a private message, as I did before the new Forum presentation, but without success.

For sure it is. There is no function for anyone but the participants to read PM/Conversations in either vBulletin or XF. The title "conversations" is the default for the equivalent "PM" functionality in XF.
