Let's see your pets.

After growing up with many large dogs, me and Francesca opted for a small dude:

He's a fat one, but Pugs are the funniest, most entertaining small dog I've ever been around. The ultimate lap guy. He climbs up the stairs, then sits there and whines because he's afraid to come back down :lol

Here he ferociously guards the house from his donut:

Jet

3 years old, call sign "Jet", black labrador. Jet is the 7th Lab I've owned. He's a great companion and most affectionate until the guns come out of the cases. Then he won't let anybody touch or pet him. He becomes totally focused on retreiving the birds and will run hard (or swim hard) for hours. When I put my gun away he'll leave me if I let him and he'll find someone else who's still shooting and retreive for him. When the last gun is put away, he turns back into a love whore. A great hunter, a great dog, and a great friend.

Cosmo; my best (and sometimes only :wink ) friend. Definitely not a lap dog, though he tries sometimes...

"Buddy". Researched tons of breeds, and decided that an authentic German bloodline German Shepard was for me. :thumbsup

I wanted a White one, but when I went to the breeder this darned runt of the littler kept jumping on me and licking my hand. Then he grabbed my hand and pulled me around to where the breeder kept their snacks. The rest is history.....

Here's my boy hanging out with his cousin (my sisters dog, who is a bit crazy, and you don't want to make mad).

Dave,
Don't mean to change the subject, but your camera takes some damn nice pictures. What camera do you use?

Canon EOS 10d I bought for the woman three or four years ago. It was their original consumer digital SLR, 6.5 megapixel. You can get much faster, much higher res DSLR's now that will whip this ones ass. Much of it is in the lens too. I've got a couple, but mostly I use a decent Tamron that's by no means the best, but way better than your standard $100 or $200 lens...

P.S knowing even a minimal amount of the user-set functions on a camera like that will let you take some pretty good shots. Worth the 15 minute instruction read.

I'm just catching up on some old threads... Chip your dog sounds perfect! I shoot a fair bit over here in the UK - Grouse, Pheasant, Partridge - it's fantastic to see dogs working, a real pleasure to see. To see one that is instinctively working with guns is wonderful.

Although I have a fair bit of land at home, I just don't have the time to devote to looking after a dog - I leave the house at 5.30am and get home after 8pm. So I have two cats (Toast and Marmalade), they spend most of their time outdoors and have decimated the local mouse population!

My two children would love a dog - so I'm reviewing how we might do it at the moment. A gun dog would be my ideal.....

Neilda,
When I was younger I did a little shooting in the UK. I took a few lessons from Jack Rose at the London Shooting School compliments of James Purdey and Sons and have also shot with Ken Davies at the Holland and Holland Shooting Grounds. A Lab will not take that much of your time to train and he'll make your whole life better, not just your hunts. Here's the lowdown. You pull them out of the litter at exactly 49 days and start training them the next day. Spend just 30 minutes a day (15 in the morning and 15 in the evening) and in 3 weeks your little puppy will sit, stay, come, and retreive. By age 4 months he will heel. Keep it up as much as you can till he's 12 months old and then you'll never have to train him again. He'll be a rock solid hunter and friend for life. Taking your dog for a walk without a leash and having him walk under control on your left side and respond instantly to your requests is as impressive to most people as your GT. :thumbsup The best book to read is "Water Dog" by Dick Wolters. Read it and you'll have a good idea if it's for you. Jet is sleeping at my feet as I type this, I can't imagine my life without him. Try it, you'll like it! All the best.

Good advice.... I should get a dog really, Holly and Harry (my children) would absolutely love the notion. Maybe if I do I could call you for some advice or mail you off forum? Next year maybe? I'd prefer a smaller dog than a Labrador - spaniel size perhaps.

Did Purdey invite you because you have a Purdey?

DBK, is this lens you speak of the Tamron 28-75 F/2.8? If so, that's the best zoom lens < $800 IMO :cheers I have the Canon 17-55IS F/2.8, Canon 70-200 F/2.8 IS, and Canon 100-400L IS and love all 3. :banana

Neilda,
PM me any time and I'll give you a phone #. If you're ever near AZ you can drop by and see Jet work/observe the process. I do have a Purdey that I had built for me over 20 years ago. Delivery took 4 years (worse than my wait to get a GT) but it is most beautiful and a delight to shoot. The fitting process took most of a day and was a lot of fun. It's conducted at the London Shooting School and yeah, that's the only time Purdy & Sons comps anything. :lol Cheers.

Most times I am incapable of envy. I don't look at others wives and think.... I don't look at others cars and think.... I don't have much interest in cash or what others have....

But your Purdey. :eek Sorry Chip, but I envy you that. I really do. Beautiful, sublime.... I've handled a few over the years, but to have one made for you? Lovely. Fantasic. I was loaned one a few years ago to see how it shot. I can't tell you how close I came to stealing it! (Not really of course).

Heavenly, heavenly guns.

It's one of those purchases I should go ahead and make, but I can't justify it. I refuse to justify it. I'm happy with my 'EELL' - lust is good.

Lucky you. I suppose it's in a wonderful case too?

Actually don't tell me.
