Origin of White/Bluestripe colors?

Does anyone know which GT 40 teams raced under the white/blue stripe colors? I think that Ford France fielded GT 40s in Europe in the 60's wearing white/blue but also with a thin red stripe too -- French flag colors. There must be a better reason for these being offered on the modern GT. Thanks.

Call Harvey Siegal at VIR. Harvey had an original white GT40 with blue stripes.

they are the original U.S. colors

White and Blue History

I have been told by some of my friends who are avid vintage racers that the white with blue stripes are the original American Team Colors. I was told that Shelby picked the color. :cheers

All countries have assigned colors to distinguish their cars in international events, such as Formula 1 and International Sports car racing. For example England = Green (british Racing Green), France = blue, Germany = white (although Mercedes and Auto Union did not paint the cars and used the bare silver metal in the 1930-1950 era), Italy = Red. However, with the current presence of sponsors dominating the race scene these colors are not followed with the notable exception of Ferrari with red cars.

The following link provides the colors for all countries. Carroll Shelby did not select the color scheme. Ford used the internationally assigned color scheme just as Corvette had done in previous years. Nothing special.

I guess I was half right! Thanks for the great link and info!

White Blue

I believe that the first USA use in international competition was by the Cunningham

1921 Frank Murphy won a race in France with a Dusenburg. Don't know if he was the first.

Not with a white car with blue stripes

Thanks to all for these interesting replies and especially the link to the miata site.

BTW and just for fun, if anyone wants to see some great footage of a GT 40 in the white/blue/red colors I mentioned above, test driven at high speed on an oval track in 1966, all you have to do is 1) have Netflix and 2) figure out the origin of my name.

Well, let's see, I figured Do You Rock, but I guess that doesn't fit or give any real clues.

Why did Ford pick GM white? The old Shelby White was off white (Wimbledon) and looked richer. I would have liked the old white but took red instead because the new one matches my refrigerator. :lol
