Oil and serpentine belts

Hi All,

I'm looking to source NEW belts for my 06'. I don't want to end up with 10 year old belts that's been sitting on a shelf. Is there a supplier that can verify age of the items they're selling prior to ordering? My car only has 500 miles and I see no visual issues with the existing belts. I assume from the numerous warnings via posts here there's been a lot failures of the oil belts and I want to avoid that failure. I certainly want to be proactive and keep withing the manufactures recommended replacement schedule of these items.

Thanks

I don't recall there being issues with the main serpentine belt. I would leave it alone unless you see signs of aging, e.g., checking or cracking.

People proactively do change the oil pump belt. They do seem to show signs so it's worth doing it. There is a topic here about the belt and a replacement equivalent that may be more readily available. I couldn't locate it with a quick search but maybe someone can find it and if not I'll look later today.

Thanks Tony and I did see the thread discussing the alternate non-Ford belt.

I just checked mine a few weeks back when I changed the fuel filter and the integrity appeared fine. I bought an OEM replacement on eBay for 100.00 dollars. Good point on the impact of shelf life. I would also like to know if there is a stamp or indicator which defines date of manufacture.

I purchased all new belts last summer. I had the same concern about buying new old stock belts. So I tried to source belts that are equivalent common use. Some luck. The oil belt is probably made by Continental-ContiTech and is available thru a variety of suppliers. Here are the results of my research:

4G7Z-6B651-AABelt, Oil Pump - Ford83.00
Y-720Belt, Oil Pump - Goodyear
45PL36Belt, Oil Pump - From Grainger46.00
20038721Belt, Oil Pump - Continental
Y-720 SIlentSyncBelt, Oil Pump - ContiTech36.00
4G7Z-8620-AABelt, Supercharger48.00
4G7Z-8620-BABelt, Main/Alternator29.00
Dayco 5100883Belt, Supercharger50.00
Dayco 5060923Belt, Main/Alternator32.00

I ended up buying all three from my local dealer who sourced them from Ford. I could not determine if the belts from other suppliers were for sure correct (probably were), but the prices were better from Ford, except the oil pump belt. The Y-720 SilentSync seems to be available from a variety of suppliers. I figured that I would rather take my chances with Ford. The oil belt did have a date on the package of 2010, remember this was sourced from Ford last summer. The other belts have recent dates on the package. I have attached pics of my old and new belts, the new ones are the brighter white print. Keep us posted on what you find.

Great detail on the pictures and your comparison list. I'm with you and would opt to purchase 10 year old Ford belts rather than taking a chance on aftermarket. I'll certainly dig around and see what's out there.

not sure what your price source is but you might want to update. also the -BA belt is now obsolete from Ford.
the oil belt run was done in 2010. you will not find a newer date code (I don't believe) but shelf wear and age doesn't make a belt weak.
continual engine heat soak and cooling is what usually wears out a belt. jmo

Yeah, I mostly think that as well. That's why I installed the 10 year old belt. However, I assume age and oxygen will eventually deteriorate the rubber, but how long??? I think I might buy the ContiTech one just to see if it is the same. Then I will have a spare, so ten years from now I can install another 10 year old belt.

The ContiTech is a little thicker and stiffer as I reported in a related thread. I decided not to use it.

nota4re - Just found your Contitech vs Motorcraft belt comparison. Great info to know. The answer to better and/or lower cost alternatives seems to always result in the same answer. Stick with OEM.

Why not the oil pump belt, since you have the car apart for the other belts?

No plans on changing any of the belts they look great just keeping as spares. I have an oil pump belt I bought awhile back.
