New Mclaren

Well the Ferrari 458 is sold. It was/is an amazing car that is hard to fault. After 18 mos or so, as the mileage was starting to add up, and the warranty was running out, so I figured it was time to try something new before the typical Ferrari depreciation got ugly.

Before I found the 458, I was initially considering a Mclaren MP4. In part because they were still too new and a lot was unknown, I went with the Ferrari. Since then, the Mclaren's have had quite a few updates to fix their new model bugs, and yet have still taken a recent beating in terms of early depreciation, so I thought it might be a good time to sell the 458 and find an MP4. I looked for a short while, and found the Tampa Mclaren dealer very nice to work with. Initially, I thought I would like to find a relatively 'low-key' black/gray/silver car, as I try to be as inconspicuous as one can driving such a machine. I was close to making a deal on a metallic gray when my wife saw one in Volcano Red at Mclaren's booth at the Amelia Island Concours D'Elegance. I normally am not a red car guy, but it is a stunning color with a lot of depth and complexity. Photos don't do it justice as it changes appearance and form in different light. When I find a car or color my wife really likes, I act quickly (before she changes her mind). The interior of the car is really nice too. I find it a little less frilly than the 458 - probably half way between the more spartan GT and the 458.

The early Mclaren reviews in the various mags and websites said it was too 'plain' looking. I have to say, it looks pretty awesome to me. I can't say that either the 458 or the MP4 looks better than the other. I like them both. Also, some reviewers said the Mclaren is too quiet or not exciting. With the sport exhaust (a must) and the 2013 upgrades, I beg to differ. Car is very quick and I actually prefer the exhaust sound to that of the Ferrari. Again, it is completely subjective, but I found the really high pitched wail of the 458 a bit too shrill after a minute or two. The Mclaren has a bit of a lower grunt. I haven't had much time to drive it due to too much rain and too much work.

Here are a few photos. Hope to get some seat time in this weekend.

They did annual service and 2013 update as well.

Looks like your car is similar in Volcano Red. Great side by side shot.

I recall one of your earlier posts - you were spot on with the interior being a bit smaller in the Mclaren. At a 'broad' 6'5, I wish it had a bit wider seat and more knee room. The Ferrari definitely is roomier inside for bigger folks.

Yeah, I am a broad 6'4". When we went to that car show, I tried to get my son who is 6'7" to drive the Mac--he got in, and literally got stuck--took awhile.

I have 1,000 miles on mine already. Comments:

1. It is a blast and seems quicker than 458
2. Forget that stupid interior noise thing---just crack the rear window. Hope you got sport exhaust.
3. I see you have lightweight wheels--look awesome with the red
4. Do you have high end Meridian (sp?) stereo? It is nice but seems to me they are all nice these days
5. When I close the rear window, it is quieter than my CTS-V. But for the size, it could be a DD
6. It gets at least as much attention as 458--maybe more because no one around here knows what the hell it is
7. If not done get as much as you can clear braded. That paint really cant be touched up
8. The first time you hit the brakes hard over 60 that rear spoiler will get your attention

HAVE FUN

Judging from your post - we have similar tastes - Ford GT, Cadillac CTS-V, MP4, and 458. Funny...

I have the Meridian stereo though haven't actually turned it on yet. Will play with it this weekend.
I am not sure about the interior noise you mention. What is it?

Thanks for the great suggestion on the clear bra. Now if only someone where I lived did this well.

I was referring to the "ISG' (interior sound generator). It will only take you 4 or 5 hours to find it on your left stalk--but don't bother. Sort of a faux sound contraption based off intake manifold. The 2013 ungrade and sport exhaust make it a waste.

One thing I like better on the 458 is the larger paddles, and a little more footroom.

We do have a lot in common-- not the least of which is being tall guys who piss away $$$ on cars. I belive Ray is a member , as well.

At my size, I also like the overall larger cockpit space in the 458 more. Never thought I would say a Ferrari is roomy. My wife hopes the tighter MP4 cabin will incentivize me to get in better shape !

I know someone makes aftermarket carbon paddles for the MP4 that are bigger (www.macarbon.com). Might be a cool solution for you.

Where are your cars parked? Don't see those kinds of restrooms in most garages, lol...

Between my biz partner and I, we have over 10 cars so we got ourselve a warehouse to store our cars.
Parking is always an issue here in So Cal where most sub 2M houses have tiny 3 car garages. LOL

63 is my wifey's and we've had it over a year. It's tuned and makes about 550whp. Ran that car at the first airstrip event and pulled many cars including renntech SL65 and 458.

Not sure if Fla is a front plate state, but Exotic care makes a neat floating plate that uses holes that are already under the fascia.

The Mac manual tells you to take it easy for the first 625 miles-- nothing over 150 MPH!

Fortunately , the looks of the car distract people enough so that I can avoid the embarrassment of being seen getting in and out of the car. Very contorted.
