One has to wonder how much of Toyota's problems are due to the fact that the government regulators has a vested interest in Toyota's US based competitors!

I am betting none. Those politicians running the show have voiced their disdain for American cars quite often.

Think product development and validation processes (DVP&R) rather than politics. And I wouldn't be surprised if similar news didn't keep coming ~ unless it gets 'managed'. Heavily invested in their existing culture and processes, it won't be easy to turn this one.

I am actually working on the case that is cited in the article. Toyota has some serious problems here. What we are finding is that Toyota appears to have been brushing a number of their problems under the carpet, hoping that they'll go away. One of the big issues with these steering relay rod failures is that they generally, but not always, result in an impact with something. Toyota has sent out non-engineer investigators to examine the vehicles involved and consistently claimed that the failure occurred on impact rather than causing the impact. Unfortunately their "investigators" could not, or would not, notice or acknowledge that many of these showed clear evidence of fatigue failure.

This issue is long from over.

A seniorOEM exective/mentor once summed this up rather well:

You won't find what you aren't looking for" ~ and I believe it applies here.
