Lug Nut Lunacy

While doing a suspension detail on the car for a show, I pulled all 4 wheels, only to find my Ford shop had rather aggressively tightened my right front wheel to the point that the wrench slightly collapsed two of the lugs.

I've searched threads on lug nuts until I can't see, and have found various fitments in 1/2-20, bulge seat, chrome. The link below is just like what I removed, but require a 3/4" socket as opposed to the 13/16" I used on the others.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Gorilla-Lug...Parts_Accessories&hash=item5aefa8c786&vxp=mtr

So the question is, are these acceptable, or can someone point me to 1/2-20 in 13/16"? Sorry for such a totally basic question.

The nut itself is covered by the stainless cap. Just go to Ford and get some. Take one with you, don't tell them it's for a Ford GT, and they cost about $2 each; OR, order some from Torrie. You might look for old threads on Derry's custom nuts and see if he still has some for sale.

Those look like a good choice if you want that look. There are lots of choices in decorative design. Price is right, but of course you will have to buy 5 sets as these are in a 4 pack. The stainless jacketed lugs are problematic. The moment one of the points begin to round, or if the socket is ever hard to get on, replace it. If the stainless jacket completely rounds off you will have to cut the stainless cover off while on the wheel to access the 3/4" steel hex beneath. Do-able with a Dremel, but tedious.

Wasn't clear on the ss cap. Thank you. Far as the cool replacements, I believe brother Derry is well out of supply, as most of the threads I saw were old, and most were along the lines of getting up quantity orders. Sorry I missed that train!

Very informative, and thank you. I can now see the ss 'jacket' was what collapsed. And that would make the 'real' lug underneath a 3/4", so it all makes sense. An odd design, but I'm going with solid lugnuts unless advised differently. Thanks!

I bought McGregor lug nuts form Summit Racing. You can go to Summit and click on lug nuts and there is application for the Ford GT and they are high quality as I have had mine on and off many times changing from track to street tires and they still look like new

Steve, did you mean McGard lugs? (Didn't see McGregor.) I hope so, because that's what I just ordered! I see they were through-hardened as opposed to Gorilla's 'basic' product which is case-hardened. Maybe overengineered, but if yours have looked good from many changes, plus a lifetime rust guarantee, this was a good move. Thanks.

Consider using ARP's Ultra Torque Lube on both the threads and the seating surfaces....

You got it: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mcg-64010 And as if the endless potentital for hardened nut jokes aren't enough, remember you need to be sure you get a bulge. In your seat no less.

To be sure I understand, are the original equip lug nuts stainless steel jacketed or solid. SS jackets are a PITA.

OK,
1). Why are Derry's nuts better than McGard in earlier post?
2). Are they still available?
3). Should I do a production run of Derry copies?

Derry's nuts are custom engraved McGards nuts. Do a search. I don't know if he is still making them.

Got my McGard lugs yesterday (Man, Summit is FAST. One day delivery.) And they are just what was needed. Closer inspection showed about half of my jacketed OEM lugs were partly collapsed, pretty dinged up. Not hurting clamp ability probably, but certainly close to becoming 'rounded off' and a major pain. Two of them got semi-stuck in the lug socket. A good move all around, and for $70 total, painless too.

100 lbft dry. With lube, it would be less, how much less ???
