Looking to buy a high mileage GT

Hello to all Forum Members and Gt Owners.

Greetings from Switzerland.

I am looking at the potential purchase of a GT here in Europe with (relatively) high mileage: about 60.000 miles.

Any particular area of concern?
Sometime very low miles cars can hide more issues than the "drivers" with higher miles on them ...

I tend to buy special cars that are not "garage queens" as my plan is to actually drive and enjoy them rather than keep the miles low for investment.
The price difference with the miles becomes substantial.

I own several air-cooled Porsches but was looking for a long time to own a beautiful GT with the classic shape from the '60 and the modern comfort and performance.

Price looks attractive at about 150.000 USD ... maybe the car has issues ... I will need to check it out.

Thanks for your opinions and suggestions.

It might be wise to have a PPI done by a GT expert - I would suggest someone in Europe like GT101 evaluate the car.

Good luck! I love my "high mileage" (36,000) Tungsten GT.

That price is hard to believe. Some wrecked GTs sell for more than that in the US. Anything more you can tell us about the car?

If anyone wants to comment on what a "high mileage" 35K, 50K, 75K mile GT is worth, I'd like to know. All you ever hear are these pristine examples selling. Does anyone think a 75K mile well taken of car with good maintenance is out there for 150K...or is 200K probably the bottom for this type car?

The high mileage car "price" is something I rarely hear on this site or does everyone keep it a secret so they can buy multiples?

I would be interested to know high mileage GT values also. I almost pulled the trigger on a 32k mile Tungsten in Dec '13 for $170k. I haven't seen much for sale above 20k miles since then...

The car is solid red without stripes, registered in Europe 2007, looks completely stock. I left a message for the seller.
Probably the high mileage is discouraging the potential buyers looking for an investment and the channel for such cars is mostly the "word of mouth" between the model fans community ... here in Europe this group of people is limited and the costs to run such a car very high.
Also the maintenance and service are an issue here in Europe and may detract from the value.
Auction houses and traders will probably avoid such high mileage as difficult to place.

I am no expert in the Ford GT market, but I know the Porsche market well.
The price difference between a pristine low mileage 964 RS, as an example, and an high mile one could be 100% !

If you want to collect you pay 100% more and you do not drive it, ... otherwise you save and enjoy!

See if you can get the last 4 numbers of the VIN. 2005 or 2006?

If Wrecks are selling in the 150K, and Super Performance cars are at $ 150+ those high mileage GT's look Very attractive. I don't think anyone will sell their high mileage cars for anywhere near that. Maybe a Dealer might find one but
it will not be in their inventory for 150K,

I went to look at a 2011 911 Turbo at CarMax a couple weeks ago. Was a pretty day so I drove the GT..... On a whim after the test drive the salesman asked if I was trading the GT in. I asked them to give me a price on it but they could not drive it. Thier first offer was 197k with 26k miles.

I did not buy the Porsche but still thinking about one.

As Ralphie kindly mentioned we at GT101 are probably the biggest GT specialist in Europe. We have 11 cars in our facility right now. And have inspected GTs across Europe. I'd be happy to inspect the car for you - at that price you'd be right to be cautious.

By all means call or drop me an email

From what I've seen, anything over about 10-15k miles has a substantial discount over other cars. I would estimate $20-30k. I am happy to have a car with 17k miles that I am not afraid to put some miles on. I personally would rather drive it than have it sit in the garage, but each to his own. I also suspect if you keep the car 20 years, the mileage discount will shrink. Sure cars with 100 miles will go for a premium. But I dont know that a car with 10k miles and one with 30k miles will have much of a price difference in 20 years. Just my 2 cents.

A wrecked car just sold for 190's with 2 accidents and a salvage title. Fixed

I would have never thought this would be on a salvage bad fixed car.. Id rather have a higher mileage car then a wrecked one. These cars are so straight forward to buy. It is just a car. Go drive it and if and if you know anything about cars you will find out the issues. IMO PPI only make it harder on yourself. They will find to many things wrong that do not really matter. Now if you do not know what to look at then maybe it would be a good idea to have a guy look at it but only if he knows GTs and the minor issues they have. Some day miles will not matter IMO. My car has 27k and it looks a lot better than some low mile cars and if I told you it had 5000 miles you would believe me.

I went and looked at this salvage car and found issues only a GT owner would see and told him not to buy it but he had to have it. I Think he sold it for more. There are a lot of lower mile shitty cars out there that people buy just because the clock.

The cool thing about buying exotics at Carmax is, for a very reasonable price, you can buy a full extended warranty. It's really crazy that they do it. I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

IMHO, 20 yrs from now, other then the "in the wraps" cars that were never driven, the mileage of these cars will not have an effect on their sale prices.

Wow. that's pretty impressive offer. Of course I'm sure they were not gonna budge on the 911 to make it seem like premium trade.

How did you like the 911 Turbo? Was it a plain Turbo or Turbo S? I have thought about going to look at one. How did the drive compare? Have head from guys on here that they are wonderful, but talked to a guy the other day who was a Corvette guy and he said he was not impressed...or just didn't have that "raw" visceral feeling.

Thank you for all your answers and contribution.

Thanks to GT101 and Saint Ho, I may be in contact for help here in Europe.

I just got the info that the car in question has a very low 2005 VIN number: lower than 50!

Is it good or bad?

20 years from now it will probably be a plus to have a very low VIN car, but today as a driver it may have additional issues sorted out later on in the production process.

I used to have a Porsche 997 turbo but after testing a 991 turbo went back to the more raw feeling of the older aircooled turbo and I presently own four between 1977 and 1998.

Hope the GT retains some of the "soul" of classic cars with modern performance.

I will contact the seller by phone later today.

My understanding is that an honest 50.000-plus miles car with a low vin can still be a good purchase under 170.000 USD (or equivalent in other currency).
Would love to join the club and meet in Le Mans next year for the 50th anniversary ... will see ...
