I'm posting this for jay anand, he is having problems with a new rack and pinion install. Jay if you're watching maybe you could tell us why you had the rack and pinion changed in the first place.

05 steering problems

i am having probs with my steering. its light when i 1st start the car but goes harder soon after. ive changed the rack and pump still the same.please help.jay in london uk

Did you buy the car new, when the work was done was there any evidence of front end damage? Other than suspension damage the only thing left are the supply hoses. Perhaps there is a kink somewhere in the plumbing.

One other thought, you may want to check for air in the system. It could be a whining noise from the pump area or air bubbles in the power steering reservoir.

05 gt jay

i didnt by the car new. But have had it cheched out when i bought it. No damage. I was in traffic in london and noticed it started getting harder. thanks for that i will speak to the garage and see what they say. I was told it could be power steering fluid cooler. Thanks. Jay

jay anand probs with steering

hi paul i changed the rack and pump because Roush in the uk said that this would resolve the problem. It hasnt they also said that its slightly harder than other cars but dont know what it could be. They also said that the car is fine but i am sure that it should be lighter. It hasnt been in an accident. I drove it today it felt hard.Took it to a workshop they said it was fine. Jeremy clarkson,i remember, said the steering is light. Am i going mad??????????????

I think the only resolution is to drive another GT.

I am sure Roush checked the caster settings already, but in case they haven't. More caster will make the car harder to steer with a stronger tendency to return to center.

thanks for that info will speak to roush. they said that they had no idea what else could be wrong with it and to post it on gt forum maybe someone can help. so thanks again guys will keep you updated in my next threads. ps have had the power upgrade roush have pushed the power to 612bhp. smaller pulley.

There were a few power steering pumps replaced under warranty in the US based on the informal polling I did here on the Forum. That said, I'm not convinced it was really needed. Several GT that I have worked on (including my own '06 #1208) showed evidence of a leaking pump at the first oil change. However, in my car and others that I have serviced, there was NO evidence of leaking at subsequent service intervals. My speculation is that perhaps there was an over-fill situation from the factory - or o-rings or something that needed to swell.

Back to your issue, I would think that the rack, the pump, and suspension settings are the primary suspects - perhaps even in that order. Replacement of the rack itself did not solve the problem, so I would very much have the pump itself at the top of the suspect list. Maybe, for example, it is not providing sufficient pressure. This could be the cause even though all outward appearances would be "normal".

Think you nailed it Kendal :)

He said he replaced the pump along with the rack.

Thats right Paul. I have replaced both parts. Its funny because i am not sure if there is a problem. I do need to feel the steering of another gt. The problem with that is that there are only 28 official cars in the uk. And a hand full of imports, like mine. Keep u posted thanks again.

.........Took car out yesterday.Dont think it could be the caster settings as the steering is light when it is 1st started then goes slightly harder a few minutes later, but im no mechanic i could be wrong.Someone mentioned it could be the oil cooler for the steering, could that be it...?Any other suggestions guys
When the car goes over pot holes or speed bumps theres some kind of knocking coming from the front end.Could that have something to do with it?

Greetings,
Have you contacted any of the other owners of FGT's in the UK? They are on this board.
Please also DO NOT START a new thread every time you post. I am going to merge them,
this creates lots of work for me. Thanks.

It would be a good idea to have someone really knowledgeable about FGT's have a look at it. Depending on where you live, maybe someone here on the 'Forum could suggest someone.

Seems Roush is the place to have gone. When they did the job did they flush the system, you may have some shavings or other debris floating around. At rest it settles down but after a short drive it's blocking a valve or orifice.

I am in the UK and would be glad to help you.... maybe trying my GT to see if it is any different.

Having said that I would just follow what Roush say. They are the experts and know the car inside out. They are also really helpful and willing to go the extra mile to make sure your ownership experience is flawless (at least this has been my experience so far... and I have been to Roush in several occasions).

My GT is with them at the moment (good thing as well since the weather is really bad now) as we are waiting for a couple of parts.

I am having a heater blower replaced (its freeeeeeeezing), a mirror fixed (yep my garage is really tight) a Ford smaller pulley+tune, short shifter kit, accufab TBs and air intake stiffener and KW suspension kit installed.

My car will be ready mid-end Jan... basically this is the WORST possible period to be waiting for parts... thn again it is also the worst possible period to be driving the GT in London.

Send me a PM if you want to get together.

Have a Merry Christmas and good luck no matter how you decide to proceed.

Roush know what they are doing. The know the car inside out having prepped ALL the cars that made it to Europe....

I will speak with David Jones @Roush and see what his thoughts are on the subject.

Roush are closed until Jan 1st though.
