Gas Station Attendant Attacks Ford GT

I live in the fine State of NJ where it is illegal to pump your on gas. Taking my FGT out for the first nice day this weekend, I headed to the gas station. Upon pulling up, the attendant started pushing up and down on the fuel lid. As I removed my seat belt, he started with two hand pumps like you would see on Grey's Anatomy. By the time I got my door open and out of the car, he had produced a white plastic card that he was trying to stick between the fuel lid and bezel to somehow pry open the lid. I was on such a state of shock, the only thing I could say was STOP! STOP!

Does anyone have I similar story? I'm thinking this one is pretty far out there.

I would gently try to find out if the nozzle fits his backside ... without any lubrification.

Oregon has simular law. aka No-Pump Employment of gene pool cellar dwellers. (in the cities at least)

I was on Southern Oregon coast. Stopped for gas.Older Pump handle sqeezer came running out of his 10sq foot office yelling "you can't do that" it's against the law etc.

I calmly told him that this car has a cap less fill system (which he had never heard of, as this was in 2006) and if the nozzle was inserted in-correctly it could damage the system and the repair costs were about $1,500. And if he had his hand on the hose he could closely monitor MY filling up the tank and thus he could insure that I didn't ingest too many of those harmful fumes and avoid being issued a $5,000 fine.

After a few moments he said go ahead and do it yourself, as his boss wouldn't like it if he damaged anything. But don't tell anyone! Not that anyone of about 1,000 cars driving past (it was summer) could have watched.

So I pumped about $12.00 worth of 92 octane, paid and left. For a user friendly station up the street.

It's been my experience in Oregon that nearly all attendant allow drivers of special cars and bikes to "do it yourself" filling.

And to the best of my knowledge no one in the other 48 states has had any medical repercussions from filling their tanks.

A similar experience in Oregon -

The attendant came out, looked at the car and said, "I don't think I want to try to fill it for you - but please don't tell anyone."

Could NJ be more F-up? Sorry, I used to try cases there in places like Newark.

You can pump your own diesel fuel in OR if you chose to do.

I was told by one of them their official title is: Fuel Dispensing Technician aka FDT.

sounds like the dude was an idiot. Laws mean little to me. I always pump my own fuel.

Seriously, even in NJ, nobody is going to stop you from pumping your own. You'll need the pump jockey to reset the pump. Laws are effed up, but people aren't as effed up as the laws.

True. My regular station in Jersey is always happy to see me arrive in the GT, because they know they won't have to lift a finger.....and I tip them each time (those guys make next to nothing per hour).

Oregon gas fills

Actually, Oregon statutes explicitly allow rider/driver self fill up for certain vehicle classes, such as motorcycles. I have never had a problem anywhere in the state filling my motorcycles, GT, or Lotus. The attendant just starts the pump and hands me the nozzle. Don't even have to ask.

When I ran into that in Portland (Oregon), the pump jockey recited Oregon law and insisted he pump the gas. I told him that wasn't going to happen, 'got back in my car and drove across the river into Wash. St. and filled up there.

'Dumbest, most idiotic, 'do-so-because-we-say-so' refueling law I've ever run up against.
