Gas smell when driving uphill

Anyone experience this, or find a remedy for it?

Took my car on a lengthy ride over the weekend. No smell when driving on a flat highway. Some smell when in the twisties, noticeable smell when going uphill.

This happened regardless if the tank was full or almost empty.

How are you filling tank?

Topping up 3 clicks?

If putting in nozzle; using trigger lock and leaving handle/hose on own weight; will stress filler neck and overflow at full and drip in pans.

I hold handle for all 16 gallons (after low light), half trigger; and stop at first click.

I have not experienced this. My first check would be the frequently failing Ford fuel filler flapper. If that checks out, the next step would be the evaporative emissions canister, which is inside the right front fender. You need to pull the liner to get to it. The factory service manual test uses a smoke machine that pressurizes the system to detect leaks.

Yep....me too.

The smell is primarily in the car. But I like the idea of a pressure test.

Thanks for the comments.

I will have a smell right after filling up, but goes away shortly.

Frank, you may need to cut down on the jalapeños when you fill up.:rofl

If you fill the tank up to the top there will be some spillage on hills & corners for awhile. I had a gasoline smell even in the garage. It ended up being a evap canister full of fuel. Maybe from too many overfills? Replaced it & all is well.
