FUEL PIPE/SLOW EVAP REPLACEMENT

Well, after a couple of check engine lites/ stalls, it had to be done, my filler pipe was replaced.One day i will post pictures of the whole procedure,but here are the details.
1. I am mentally old , DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE A CLEAR HEAD, ALL THE TOOLS , COPUTER PROGRAMS AND MACHINES.
2. Smoke test concluded that smoke was coming up the tube past the flap/bad seal.
3.once car was lifted ,the wheel taken off, the inner fender had to go,front facia bolts loosened and most removed, taped the fender and hood , HOOD STAYED ON!,CHARCOAL CANISTER,HORNS, BRACKETS ,HOSES, MORE HOSES, HEAD LITE ASSEMBY, BOTTOM CHIN SPOILER ALL HAD TO GO.
4. PUUL CABLE FROM FUEL FLAP WAS REMOVED, THEN CAME THE WHOLE FENDER ASSEMBLY 5. DUE TO THOSE GREAT BODY LINES ALL BOLTS HOLDING THE BOTTOM FACIA TO THE SIDE ALL HAD TO GO TO.
6.THERE IS NO WAY OF JUST PULLING THE INNER FENDER, NO WAY.
7Bottom line is it takes alot of patients, you can destroy the paint , fender front facia in a heart beat.
8.The car runs alot smoother, no dip, and does not drop in rpms :thumbsup
9. Moral of this story get it done before any warranty is up.remember in n.y if that code gets bedded in your computer YOU CANT PASS THE NEW EMMISSIONS INSPECTION .... ENJOY GTJOEY 1314 AAAAND LOVING IT :thumbsup

Im still under warranty,and mad the second parts car doesnt have its batmobile wings welded on yet :biggrin silly you i need at least 3 more parts till complete :thumbsup I was just suggesting that if you have a low milage car check everything out , dont ignore any little things, this stuff could add up in the long run. Also under warranty they are very eager to help after warranty who knows.... gtjoey :thumbsup

I just picked my GT up from our local Ford dealer's shop again yesterday. They installed another replacement fuel filler. The technician had a very difficult time finding the evap leak this time with the smoke test. One of the GT engineers suggested charging the system with freon and then use a freon detector to locate the leak. The new procedure worked and once again the filler pipe had to be replaced. The first replacement looked like it was defective. The flap was off center. The design of the flap appears to me to be destined to fail. The o-ring is exposed to the inserting of a fuel nozzel and could be damaged very easily. Fortunately McCoy Ford here in Muncie has an outstanding service department and the down time was minimal.
 
Great to hear its fixed so far, when we pulled the first pipe , if you blew with your own breathe it was so week that the air pushed right threw. The new one was rock tight, alsom there is a plastic pipe bend from the electric modern erg valve on the frame , some times it cracks or chaffs under the bend till it gets to the steel pipe under the frame. BIGJOB FOR THE REGULAR GUY , BUT HAPPY ITS FIXED. Give me a buzz im home tonite gtjoey :thumbsup
 
I had the same repair done at my local dealer, what a fiasco. They took a week to do it, and complained all the while about how much work they were having to do on my car. When I finally got it back I was relieved and amazed to see that they had managed to R&R the body panels without any damage. But subsequently found that the the steering wheel was off-center by about 20 degrees (presumably they had used a floor-jack in a tender-spot), there is also an annoying buzz and some rattling from the front end, and the fuel filler cap could not be opened! Another trip to the dealer, had it aligned (steering wheel still not 100% straight, but it is close to it), cable was reattached to fuel filler cap (still lazy to open due to weak spring). Still rattles and buzzes from front end. And most importantly they remain indifferent to the fact that you cannot get the car into first when stationary without first going into second. Also, I have not even brought their attention to the loose interior trim panels yet, I think I'll be better fixing them myself.

In the three years I had it, my Viper spent less than a few hours at the dealer (for an oil change), it ran flawlessly, never failed, and needed nothing.

In the few months that I have owed the GT, it seems to have had a new issue come up every few days. This car is a vastly overrated joke. It turns a lot of heads and gets a lot of attention, but the Z06 and Viper have vastly superior engineering and reliability.

If any one wants to make me an offer in the region of $150K I would be delighted to get rid of this over-rated and over-hyped example of poor American workmanship. I very much doubt that I will get so lucky as to find a buyer, esspecially as I have a tough time making a sales pitch for something that I have absolutely no confidence in. :thumbsdow

Sorry to hear about your repair woes. However, It appears that most of the problems are dealer inflicted and not characteristic of the cars fundamental design.

Both my Viper (9 yars old) AND my GT have both been relatively trouble free.

How have all of you noticed that you had a fuel evaporation problem? How fast was fuel disappearing? Was it detected through fuel milage or an odor?

Neither , the car would stall coming to a red lite, also at idle i was reading about 625 to 650, sounds great like a flat head merc but would stall out. Got to be dangerous , the flap does not seal properly inside the pipe..If it didnt stall ,after about 30 miles oR so the check engine lite would re appear only to bring a 442 code ,small evap leak. ON A PROPER CAR WHEN YOU COME TO A RED LITE , POP THE CLUTCH THE IDLE IS DEAD AT 750, BAD PIPE THE CAR WOULD DROP TO 250!!!!! JUMP TO 850,DIVE TO 200 THEN STALL...MINE IS FINE NOW .
