I've found that people think the mass that plants consists of comes from the soil. It doesn't, ~95% of the mass of a tree is carbon stripped from the air using energy from the sun. Even the water required comes from the air, initially.

So when you burn a log with 100 rings you are witnessing the release of sunlight collected over a century.
