Do most of us think the standard radio was adequate?

I especially enjoy the way the shiny black faceplate matches the rest of the interior

Doesn't it shift to AUX and isn't there a aux in cable somewhewre at the back, that can go as an Ipod input aswell ? I haven't opend up the radio slot, but mine shifts to Aux and I hear silence. As nothing is connected. But I suspect, somewhere there is a cable left, hungry to be discovered...Although it says in the owners guide :'The AUX mode is inoperative for this application' means nothing more than it is not wired ex factory; - to me.. :wink

Jay, go have a look, and then design a kick ass Ipod holder. :banana Going via FM with the Ipod is not the same quality..

I think Jay aka Analogdesigner is already on the wiring diagram.... At least I hope so !!!!
Am I correct, Jay buddy?

Having grown up cruising Main in muscle cars with the stereo blasting, I actually like the GT's sound system. I'm also a fan of McIntosh and like how the face mimics their tube amps.

I like the way the radio looks, it adds to the retro feel of the car. With that said, I would be much happier w/o the sub or the radio and in its place a nice little cubby hole like porsche used to put in their cars in the 80's when you didn't order a radio from the factory (anybody remember that?).

As far as the iPod and aux input debate is concerned, the final word is:

There is an aux input jack for the mcintosh on the back side - really easy to hook an ipod up to...and then you can listen to it via the aux channel.

So it is completely possible.

I think Ford maybe aimed too high by including McIntosh equipment in the car. Some people probably think "wow, look at that old ass looking radio", not knowing McIntosh is one of the premier audio companies in America.

Personally, I think the pairing is pretty well done, considering the McIntosh stuff follows that whole american ingenuitiy/expertise/hand assembly thing the GT was going for(hand assembled circuit boards :willy ). And I love the style of Mc equipment...

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it !!! Party on ! :banana :banana

Great!
What kind of cable/pin connector are you using?
Anything special needed for the hook up (length of cable, etc)?

I had used an IPod with FM transmitter in the GT on occasion but am thinking of upgrading to a new unit (IPod or other but have not decided what to purchase).

Like others I feel the Mac stereo is a real nice unit, the sound quality is very good considering the available interior space.

The aux input is a female RCA (left and right). Get a male RCA-to-mini adapter and feed it out through the side hole in the magnesium radio bracket.

This type of cable can be found at any electronics retailer (BB, CC, HHG) and at most should be $20 if you spring for something like a Monster Cable...

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'll do it anyway. I too love the Mac head unit and its high quality retro look and "fit" in the GT. And it's clearly a very capable unit which permits the types of auxiliary functions many of us want. The obvious problem for me and others is the butt ugly sub :thumbsdow which doesn't "fit" physically in or emotionally with the car. I think Pipelion said the steering wheel was the GT's worst feature. Sorry, Pipelion, wrong by a mile. Having said this, we live in an imperfect world, but Ford still hit a grand slam and for those of us who don't like the sub, we can get the standard audio equipment or modify as Analogdesigner or others may be doing.

Why do the Canadians NOT have the option of getting the McIntosh ?

It's probably because we really don't have a good appreciation for music ...! Actually according to a Ford Canada memo they say that "The McIntosh Audiophile Sound System will no longer be available in Canada due to weight restrictions due to the bumper modification." The front bumper modifications aren't noticeable, but on another thread someone mentioned that on their factory tour they saw the cars that were waiting to be shipped to Canada. They were told that the front bumpers were considerably heavier than the US version. I posted some pictures of the (awful) cast metal rear bumper extension for the Canadian cars a while ago.

I have to admit I was unhappy when I was initially told that the McIntosh option wouldn't be available up here. Having read all the comments in the forum now I'm glad that I couldn't order it.
