Do I need any special tools to change the supercharger pulley?

I did a search and couldn't find a definitive answer.

Any tips & suggestions would be appreciated.:thumbsup

You need a press (or access to one) to get the pulley off of the spindle.

I think you need a pulley puller, and a pulley press. After some thought, I decided it was easier to just put a Whipple on. No special tools needed. Instead of buying more tools, I put that money toward buying more HP!

I have seen some places rent the pulley pullers. Be sure it is the correct one for the GT!

:thumbsup

I do have an assortment of pulley and gear pullers and a stand alone shop press. Has anyone done a writeup on the process?

you have to pull the blower..your going to need new fluid and gasket sealer because you have to remove the snout of the blower to remove the pulley and press the new one on. You lose some fluid doing this, thus the replacement fluid for the blower. Then reinstall the blower.

The glass is too close to do it with the setup on the car.

Yep, a lot more work than just swapping the stock blower for a Whipple.

Yes a lot more work.

The whipple is not just a bolt on,theres a lot more than meet the eye.

To me the differences between and Whipple and just a pulley install are on the Whipple you have to change the supercharger belt vs. on the pulley only, you have to disassemble the blower, yank the pulley and press the new one on. The rest of the install is the same. If you you mean the change the belt is a PITA, yes! You have to remove the oil pump belt 1st. The Torxs screws on the cover are a PITA. Now I have some stubby Torx bits that may help, the remove the accessory drive belt, and finally you have access to the blower belt. Yes, this may be more time consuming that replacing a pulley, but I don't know, because I never tried it.

I can..the GT guys do the pulley swap in about 30 minutes...we took 6 hours to do the whipple...3 hours or more was just doing the belt..its a PITA.

Are you saying that the GT Guy take 6 hours to do a Whipple? If so, I don't feel so bad that it took me 2 weeks. Of course I was taking my time and was waiting for a friend to come by and help with the belts and later the clamshell. I think it is easier with an extra set of hands.

nope..don't know how long on the whipple..thats what it took me. The 30 minutes was their pulley swap

The belt made the job a nightmare. On top of just the normal labor the belt wasn't really made for the 15lb. 4" pulley. It took an hour just to force it on. Whipple agreed it might be a little tight. The second time around with smaller pulley should be a piece of cake.

If you are running the 15 PSI Whipple pulley that has to be the 1st 15 PSI system I have read about. How would you compare it the the stock blower at 12 psi? You didn't need a Mafia then either right?

What pulley puller are the Pros using?.

The bad boy billet ones for the Cobra Mustangs do not fit behind the GT snout. Also worth noting the GT shaft is not threaded like the Cobra. So the tool for the Cobra cannot be used to re-install the pulley.

I installed the blower, stainless exhaust and Predator tune all at the same time. It would be hard to say what the 15 lb. pulley change did by itself. As a total package though it created a totally different car. I am not using the mafia but if I go to the 17lb. pulley I guess I'll have to check my voltage and install it.

Any input?

Jeff, this is not a "write up" on the pulley, but it includes many pictures which may give you some help seeing things in advance.

One other thing, you can reserve the gear oil when you separate the snout from the main assembly by making sure you have a clean container to catch it. See the picture about half way down. This was a tip from Shadowman, which worked well.

Here's the link: http://www.oxley.biz/pulley.htm

Thanks for the photo link Bill. I'm sure I'll reference it during the swap :biggrin.

What did you use to remove/reinstall the pulley? I have a puller designed to remove bearings from a differential, I thought that might work in conjunction with the shop press.

Hey Bill, nice looking chrome caps for oil, etc. Where'd you get them?

.

Jeff, I went down to a local tranny shop. Walked in with my SC snout, and asked if they could press it on and off.

The guy was a little nervous after he asked me what it was on, but I told him, "Let's do it!" He was very careful, and fortunately I've had some experience with presses, so we just did it. He had a 20 ton press, it came off and back on quite easily.

I said how much, he said 30 bucks! That was it. He was a super nice guy.

And jfp, I think the name of the place was mgw something. They're a Mustang outfitter.

The parts are supurb! I'm guessing you can google them or maybe someone else will chime in here.

Good luck Jeff on you pulley swap. It's a piece of cake, but I had Shadowman's telephone help on a couple of questions during the process. He's a great guy!!!!
