Axle bolt answers, finally

MG42, Valley Ford in Hazelwood. I bought my car there. They have a GT certified mechanic named Rich, who works, believe it or not, on Saturdays, so I can watch everything. I've only had it in for an oil change, but they did a first class job. I've bought 7 other vehicles there over the past ~6 years, always a pleasure. Talk to Ted Hemy (prn hemi), he's the service manager. I'm waiting for another 500 miles on mine to do an oil change and the bolts at the same time before winter.

Has anyone one on the board swapped the bolts themselves or at the very least watched the entire process? I ask because after looking at the repair CD it appears to be a process that can be done rather easy with no secondary components having to be removed. Is this true? Shadowman
I'm on board with that idea and ready to swap out the bolts myself. So someone please post the procedure from the service manual (I know I need to get one; just haven't gotten around to it yet). Any idea what the replacement parts cost?

I understand it to be approximately $150.00

fjpikul,
Thanks for the info, I will give them a call this afternoon. I bought my car down the road from Paul Cerame. Not overly excited about the whole experience there. Nothing really bad just not good. I'm looking to buy a couple of F-350's in 2007 also.

Thank's again

Ford Response

I called the GT 800 number on Wednesday and expressed my concern over the bolt failures and the fact that I drive mine long distances on a regular basis. The initial response was that there was not a recall on this, but they would take my VIN and check with engineering. They said they would call me back with an answer. That afternoon they called to say that they did not want me to be concerned about this and therefore they would replace the bolts under the warranty. Interestingly, they then seemed very concerned that I get it into the dealer ASAP. They wanted me to call them when I had the appointment made so they could talk directly to the dealer.

I called the dealer I bought the car from, Mall of Georgia Ford and provided them the info. They called Ford and said the parts were in Memphis and would be shipped out that day. The dealer called this morning and said the parts are in and they were ready to make the repair.

It all went very smooth, once they had my VIN number. Sounded like they compared it to a list they have and made a decision. I don't think you are best served calling the dealer since it is open to thier interpretation. I would suggest you call the GT 800 number for consistency.

As a side note, I called a couple of dealers in Atlanta and talked with the GT mechanics. They all said they had not seen a failure yet with these bolts.

My car is a 2006, VIN is 0314. Build date is 1/06

Bad service story for the week:

I just called the so-called Ford GT Customer Assistance Center, and talked to a person who essentially told me that if I wasn't having a problem, there is nothing she can do. This despite the fact that the previous VIN to my car has already had the failure. What a joke.

Good service story for the week:

Yesterday I took my 2006 Hyundai Sonata (kids' car) in for its first oil change. The "check engine" light had come on a few times, and the service advisor gave me the standard "you probably just didn't tighten the fuel cap" answer. But when the car was ready an hour later, the tech had diagnosed a defective valve in the evaporative emissions stuff and had replaced it.

I called back and spoke to a different person, who asked me for the transaxle number, then I am to call her back.

I am driving over to look at the number (which, I am told, is clearly visible, and begins with "FGT"), I'll let you know what happens.

Of course, one could argue that MoFoCo should already know what my transaxle number is.......................

I did the exact same thing. Number is on top of the transaxle housing center of the engine compartment, read it from the passenger side. I am waiting to hear back from the receptionist. We will see what transpires.

Crap....my No is 313. I went to the dealer and just got the there's no recall routine but he did say he would look into it. I guess I'll call the 800 number and get on the merry-go-round. :bored

My dealer, Cavalier Ford in Chesapeake VA, is ordering the kit for overnight delivery and will cheerfully install it at no charge. No questions, no problems.

A request for those who have had have had the bolts replaced:
Would you please post your Ricardo Transaxle ID and whether or not the transaxle was found to originally have had the upgraded components. This might help those who are deciding what action to take. Thanks.

MG42, when you call in, tell them Dr. Pikul (pickle) sent you. The owner is a personal friend, and if you want, I can hook you up. Frank

I still havn't gotten my nice letter from Ford with the Special GT phone number. I guess it doesn't really matter since no one seems to be getting any special treatment anyway. :biggrin

Special Number

Super B:
Those of us with the "Special" number will share with you :willy

GTJim, Come on down to St. Louis and have it done at my favorite dealership in Hazelwood. If you want, I'll get both our cars set up for the fix. Gotta do it before winter sets in. Frank

Frank, have you talked with your dealer about doing this fix? Have they done it before on other GTs? I'd certainly consider a nice drive to St. Louis - if for no other reason than to drive, but I do want to make sure tha the dealer has experience doing this.

Let me know when you're ready to get them in!

Mine is the only GT they service, and I've only been in once for a free oil change. They are a long time SVT/Roush dealer, have several SVT master techs and the one GT certified tech, trained in Wixom. I'm leaving for Tampa Sunday morning for a week (and dinner with Piccola, also renting a Shelby GT350H) on hospital computer business. I'll talk to the owner during the week, and see what I can set up. He's a personal friend of mine. Like I mentioned, the GT tech works Saturdays, so we can watch everything. MG42 was suppoed to talk them this week, but haven't heard anything yet. I'll let you know more by middle of next week. Looks like we may need the serial number off our transmissions. Frank

Ditto. Called in my VIN number on Monday, and asked to give transaxel number, which was relayed on Wednesday. Told I will get a call back--nothing yet! 06 Tungsten #1174
