Last weekend there was an event taking place called the Top Gun Run which involved a two mile long runway in South Florida for us to come out and play on. Being that I had just taken delivery of my R8 on Thursday this seemed like a great opportunity to stretch it's legs and gather some data. We headed out early Sunday morning with another one of our customers in a Twin Turbo Gallardo Spyder to make the nearly two hundred mile (one way) drive. Ben from Wheels Boutique was good enough to meet us out there in his Heffner Twin Turbo R8 as were three other Heffner Twin Turbo Gallardo Owners and a several Ford GT owners as well. Aside from the people that we knew there was a wide variety of cars out there hoping to see what types of speed they could achieve over a one mile distance.
Early in the day I pulled my car to the starting line. This is a 2009 R8 with a Stasis exhaust. I launched the car briskly, tried my best to push the gas pedal through the floor and proceeded to row it through the gears. The car was incredibly stable throughout the run and the sound from the Stasis exhaust is simply spectacular. The car came through the one mile mark in sixth gear at 155 mph which was actually a bit faster than I had expected out of a naturally aspirated R8. I plan to dyno this car to see what it is putting out.
A little later in the day, Ben pulls his Heffner Twin Turbo R8 up to the line. This car is running our 6 psi bolt on system on 93 octane and makes a bit over 600 horsepower at the flywheel. In Ben's own words he "drove it like he stole it" and headed down the runway like a man on a mission. This car crossed the one mile mark at 177 mph! Needless to say, Ben was quite excited. Great job, Ben and thank you for coming out.
Needless to say, we will be working on a few tweaks for the next time out in hopes to run better than 180 in the mile. On the 100 octane tune I am certain that we will be nearing the 190 mark which I believe is about as fast as the car will go with the stock gearing and RPM limit. Certainly a far cry from FGT speeds but lots of fun for a daily driver type sports car.
All in all, everyone there had a great time. Thanks go to Mario and the guys at the Top Gun Run for putting on a terrific event. I suggest that anyone in the south Florida area look into this event and head out if your schedule permits. It is an excellent venue to push your car in a safe manner.
