All audio sources sound like AM radio on McIntosh?

And by x-over, is everyone referring to the amplifier? Sorry...not familiar with all of the component names. And couldn't find a crossover/x-over in the workshop manual.
Sorry X-over and crossover are the same thing. They are the boxes in the pictures 2112 posted. So the way it all works, the head unit (the thing in the dash you touch, then goes to an amp, that is behind the subwoofer. From there the amplifier sends the speaker level signal to the crossover. The crossover filters the frequencies, send the high frequencies to the tweeters, and the mid frequencies to the midrange speaker (both of these are in the door, and the pictured speakers in 2112's post).

The cross-over is composed of a set of filters depending on the speaker config. It can be a combination of low pass, band pass and high pass depending on what speakers it drives. The speakers ought to be matched to the frequency range of the pass filters, so be certain if you get one thta it matches the spec of the one you're replacing, or if you're replacing all the speakers at the same time, that the cross over matches the speakers you're using.

It's a passive device, so I'd be surprised if they really fail but heat can do nasty stuff.

No, not the amplifier. The crossover is mounted on the door. It divides the signal to the tweeter and midrange. Edit; already answered above in better detail.

I found the head unit, amplifier and subwoofer are excellent. The door speakers may have been ok, but I thought I had blown them, so I replaced with NOS direct swap outs. It wasn’t until the crossovers were replaced that I solved my problem.

For the record, I like to listen when parked overlooking a beautiful vista (something I have been doing since first getting my license)…..or when I sneak out to the garage and just sit in the car and listen to an album, whether it be The Wall ☝️, Crime of the Century, or one of my favorite Rush albums, I thoroughly enjoy myself.

Like Tony, I thought the system was pretty decent, then I had problems. Now it’s even better.
