A Gauge Question

I have a deal to buy a complete set of gauges out of a salvage GT. The seller and I have agreed on the price but all of the gauges are stopped presumably where the car was when it was in the accident. So the tach is reading 2000, oil pressure is about 60, engine temp is probably about 200 and the speedo shows 40 mph. Will these gauges park at an odd position like that when power is suddenly removed? I figure buying any used part is a gamble and I am will to gamble but if these are clearly bad I would appreciate some advice from one of you techies. Thanks.
 
Not typically. Usually when the gauges have power cut from them, they go back to zero, but, that doesnt mean they are definitely bad. Its a gamble for sure
 
The crazy thing is that if it were one of the gauges I would think for sure that it had a bad gauge but all of them is really strange to me because I can't imagine that the entire panel is bad. But perhaps they all got fried at the same moment?
 
This is only a guess, but I believe the gauges use stepper motors that if the power is cut will leave the needles were they were. Turning the car off probably doesn't cut power immediately, but in a controlled fashion after the needles are parked.

The gauges are junk to begin with so it won't get any better than that.
 
Well then I guess I should just wait for another set.

Do you mean all OEM gauges or just this salvaged set?

New OEM, another used set, or Speedhut?
 
I already have Speedhuts for my failed OEM but I was looking for an OEM panel to leave on the shelf so to speak

I mean all. If they haven't failed yet, evidence suggests that it's just a matter of time!
 
Running cool, good oil pressure and voltage. I'd hold out for a full tank of gas though.
 
Depends on the price, $500 take a chance, $1500 ask to test them first. Come to think of it, ask to test them in any case.
 
Guys, kind of odd but when power was applied to the car all of the gauges returned to their zero value so I went ahead and bought the panel. Maybe it was a dumb move but they all work at the moment. I did have a good conversation with Shannon at Red Line Gauge Works who says that he can repair/rebuild the speedometers and tachs. He also recommended the Speedhut gauges.

Maybe not so odd...the gauges get their signal from a common gauge control module. What would be odd though is that somebody knows what's wrong with bad gauges. Nobody else seems to have figured it out.
 
We have seen lots of vendors say they can repair one gauge or another. None have been sucessful to date that I have seen. Until he shows some evidence of having done so, don't believe it.

From what I understand having talked with the guy he does not repair the gauge, he simply replaces the guts from other autometer gauges. Before it sounds too exciting he said he could only do the tachs and speedos. He had done a couple of boost gauges but never any of the others.
