Oooopppssss I put 2k miles on the GT in 8 weeks...

So the car is in for the 5k service. I took it to the local Ford dealer. I had good recommendations so...

Well I found out that before my purchase:

- my car had the half shaft bolts replaced at 2,500 miles. I bought the Accufab kit and I wanted to have it installes so they checked. The service manager couldn't tell me if the OEM bolts had failed or if it was a precautionary. I decoded to wait on the Accufab.

- my car had problem with the steering pump (leak) and that everything was fixed under warranty.

Anyway everything else is fine so they are going to change oil, filters (ouch the oil filter is $400) etc.

Anything I should ask them to check?

Thanks for your help!

$400 for the filter? Surely that must be a mistake, maybe $400 for the entire oilchange (labor, filter, 10 quarts of oil). If they are charging $400 for the filter alone, I would run far far away from them!

He showed me the part number and list price...
$386.31 + $81 for 10q of oil and xxx for labor... Am I being screwed?

Yes. No way should it have been that much.

Dealer just called. The whole housing was $386.31 The made a mistake. Filter will be below $100. Thanks for pointing it out. I would have just paid it.

You'd better BELIEVE the oil filter is below $100!!!!!!!!!!!
The oil filter for the FGT is a Mann(sp?) HU 925/4. "Bravauto.com" sells 'em at $4.00 - $7.00 a piece!
The filter that comes outta Ford's parts box actually SAYS Mann on it according to a post here on the Forum! And I THINK Ford charges $40(?) for 'em?
Someone else who's bought one might comment on this?

Thanks, Spirit. I knew it was way over $7 someplace! ~~~~~

OK.. so it was $33.63 for the oil filter. $76 for the oil. $150 for labor.

As dealer charges go, 'not waaaay off. You have to remember there is a lot more time involved doing a 'change on a GT than a "Focus" (belly pans, blah, blah, blah).

(Regardless, I'm too cheap! 'Have my own hoist, etc, and 'do it myself.)

BUT! Quiz them on the EXACT proceedure they use to prime the car's oil system before starting a GT!!! Make SURE they know EXACTLY how that's done. ASSUME NOTHING. If they don't do THAT right you could have big problem$.

Just had the oil changed at a local dealer in the Seattle area, $282.
By the way, appearantly it takes 5 mechanics to change the oil as everytime I checked on the progress of the oil change, there were 5 folks around the car!

Teo, for that price and lack of GT "knowledge" it's worth the trip to Den Jenkins in Fuquay Varina who have experience with the FGT... Ask for Coy.

Last Oil change ~$200

I'm telling you something you already know, however my 5,000 service lists the oil filter at $26 and the oil at about $120. The labour is quite high - but that's the pleasure of the GT 'Rubiks Cube' when changing oil!

Empty would you care to give me a little more details? What do you mean by big $$$ problems?

Come on... I love my GT dearly (2k miles in 8 weeks should give you a hint of what car I pick every morning) but it is not the most sophisticated piece of machinery on earth.

In fact one of the reasons I chose the GT over other cars is the fact that you just tunr the key and drive.

What sort of black magic do you need to know to change the oil properly?

I admit this is the 1st Ford for me... but I doubt this engine is pushing the envelope that much. People "find" 150hp by swapping a pulley... :wink

Will it need a top end rebuild? Possibly. I don't expect it to go 150,000 without it... but then again the whole engine was offered for $35k by Ford... you should see what they charge to rebuild an air cooled Porsche engine these days....

Mad it was a mistake. The filter was $33 and the whole 5k service was $285.

Filter should be about $33.56. Just looked up the part and price.

Hope that help some

No black magic. It's spelled out in the shop manual I think.

The mechanic needs to turn the ignition to the "on" position, then, before he pushes the "START" button, press the accelerator to the floor and HOLD it there (that will disable the "start" function), then, keeping the pedal to the floor, hit the start button and the engine will then just turn over w/o starting. Let it turn over for about 20 seconds or so until the oil pressure's up. THEN start the puppy as usual.

Since I'm a little "gun shy" about posting this kinda stuff these days, will someone "roger" (or correct) the afore said?

Seems like a fair price to me.

5K service

My FGT at the dealer I bought the car from total was $109. This included Oil, filter plus look over.
