Since we were talking about livery, it would only be referred to as McLaren - "The cars were always Kiwi orange — the national racing color of New Zealand" - http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/08/mclaren-m1c/ Gulf sponsorship didn't come along until later, nor did Gulf influence the color scheme unlike Sunoco's sponsorship of the majority of Penske/Donohue cars.

Take for instance McLaren's Indy cars. They wore Kiwi Orange, but not the Gulf sponsorship - http://www.oldracingcars.com/indy/1971/
