A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing at least 30 people in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history, government officials told The Associated Press. The gunman was killed, bringing to death toll to 31, but it was unclear if he was shot by police or took his own life.

There were something like 29 or so wounded as well if I remember right. What a sad waste.
All that caused by one person.

I suppose we'll now hear more cries for additional gun laws...even though this guy wasn't stopped by any of the hundreds presently on the books.

I am sickened with grief to learn of this tragedy.... and it is likely my emotions speaking instead of my brain. But, in combing the Internet I've seen many unofficial camera-phone video captures of police officers standing behind the trees as we here the "pop, pop, pop" of gunfire coming from inside.

&*@#, it if I'm at the scene, I'm sure as hell not standing outside behind some damn tree. My fat ass is going to be crashing through the doors headed straight to where the sounds of gunfire are. Yep, perhaps the dumbest thing to do.... but I couldn't live with myself for standing around outside as innocent unarmed kids are killed in cold blood.

Too bad that couldn't revive the SOB who did this - I'd like to kill him all over again but a lot more slowly.

What a shame.

My heart and prayers are with the families effected by this - dozens of them. I can only think how proud I would be to have my children attending such a prestigious school - only to have something like this happen.

What a senseless tragedy.

A terrible thing to happen and a senseless, terrifying waste of young lives.

It is, as you might imagine, headline news here in the UK - along with much speculation about the two hour gap between the first shooting where 2 were killed, and the second shooting during which the Police were investigating the first.

Many of us here are parents with kids at school or college - we imagine they're safe there.

My condolences to families and friends..........

Thanks, we are all numb, and attempting to understand...

I can't even begin to imagine this happening at my campus. Students don't even lock laptops up when going to find a book in the library, because you just don't expect crime on a campus. I attend a campus of 48,000, and you really do feel like you know everyone.

With that many students, as you can guess, parking is an issue. People will pick you up around class, and give you a ride to your car (to get your parking spot) and no one thinks anything of getting in the car with a stranger.......after all, it's a schoolmate, right?

You attend study groups at peoples houses that you've only met once or twice in class.......after all, it's a schoolmate, right?

These were just a few things I immediately think of that really do show how closely knit college campuses are, and how much trust you have in the campus being a sanctuary. I can't imagine how that campus will change because of this. Such a tragic event. I'm upset that the bastard who did it took the easy way out and committed suicide.

And you can bet nobody at V.T. thought it would at their's either, jj.

In an article in our local paper today, a student at the university here in town was quoted as saying he wasn't worried about the same thing happening locally because 'it's different here' or some such statement as that. But, the unfortunate truth is something like this could happen ANYWHERE.

I can only imagine what the families of the shooting victims are going thru right now. It must be hell on earth for those people.
