Early 05?

First post, lurking for months. This is truly a fantastic forum. I am considering pulling the trigger on a GT, even though I'll probably have to sell my Superformance Cobra to make room.
Cobra can be replaced, my other cars, not as easily. In researching, I have read about the bearing leak on early 05's. I have located a car just under #200. It has under 1000 miles on it and three years of warranty. The dealer does not know if anything was done about potential beaing leak (speedy sleeve) but say its not leaking now. The cars delivery to them was held up for several months for the suspension recall. Would it be better to find a later car and pay more, or if the price is right on this one, go for it.

On an unrelated note, anybody here part with a Cobra for the GT and really miss the Cobra? My dad was a dealer in the 60's and I had my first ride with him in a real 427 when I was eight. I cried for him to slow down and nearly wet myself.

I did wet myself at the Texas Mile (but it was sweat).

Seriously, I have '05 #298 and I have no idea whether it has a speedi sleeve or not but I have had no issues and the car has over 4000 miles on it, some of them pretty hard miles. I have never seen a definitive way of determining which cars that got the speedi sleeve. If the price is right buy the car and don't worry about it.

Guys, as I understand the sleaves were installed only if the car leaked oil and that was almost instant (first few hundred miles). Only a few had this problem and I haven't heard of cars leaking after the fix.

I have car # 159. It has the speedi sleeve. It does not leak and the car is approaching 6000 miles. I drive it hard. It is not stock (and it is about to receive some brand new BIG mods!). I am not worried about the sleeve at all.

Have the Ford dealer run the service history on the car. If a sleeve was installed it should show up there. Also, pull the lower diffuser and see if it is dry under the crank. No sleeve, no leak = no worries.

If it has been titled / registered it no longer has the full 3 years of warranty.

I have an early 2005 car that leaked. I had the sleeve installed under warranty and no problem since. With three years of warranty I would not be too concerned.

With regard to the Cobra, I have a Shelby CSX 4000 Series that I currently have for sale. Frankly, after owning and driving the GT for a year, I don't anticipate missing the Cobra.

Thank you all for the responses. Doesn't sound like there is too much too worry about on the crank issue. I will let you know what I decide on this car.
Keep me posted if anyone else has any other thoughts.

My father was a Ford dealership General Manager when I was 8 and also gave me a ride in my first Cobra in 1964. I have both a Kirkham 427 S/C Cobra and a Ford GT. If I could only have one it would be the GT. Cobras are being made by the thousands every year, the GT is out of production forever. There is nothing like the Ford GT. It is my most prized possession.

I also own an SPF Cobra and a Ford GT. I was lucky enough not to have to sell the SPF. I like them both; they are unique. But, at the end of the day, I agree with the others, the FGT is the one.

My thought is that I can always replace the SPF someday. The other choice is my 65 GT350 Clone which I've had for 12 years. Its been on two magazine covers and a featured article in one of them. Fuel injected, supercharged, 5spd, 4 whl discs, etc. Its worth more than the SPF, but I can't see parting with it. It would be like selling one of the kids. It would look too cool next to a GT.

The cars that had the suspension recall / replace ended up with beautiful pieces - nicer than the production.

Go for it, you will have not regrets.

Like the others said, if it has full warranty, you are fine.
