New Plate

With or w/o reading post #18, I'd assume it'd be a reference to someone being an "X" gt2 class driver...or a reference to the car being in 'same.

Nope! :biggrin

Rats. Skunked again...:bored

In 1966 at Le Mans, XGT-2 led the opening lap. It was a light weight Aluminum bodied car built by the Alan Mann Racing Team and was driven by Graham Hill and Brian Muir. It was one of two entries from the AMR Team.

PS - It was Silver with Black Stripes

PS2 - It's Chassis Number is AM GT-2 and ran with a 289 Cobra engine with Weber carburetors and has the Mark I body styling. It used parts from two GT40s, Chassis Number GT40 P/1019 and P/1034.

Ralphie, you win the prize, my friend! :cheers

Alan Mann Racing (not Ford) completed their three team cars for 1966, so they did not carry the "P" chassis numbers Ford assigned. Instead, AMR assigned chassis numbers XGT-1, XGT-2 and XGT-3 (-3 was their spare at LeMans). Driven by Dick Thompson during practice, XGT-2 was involved in shunt with GT40 P/1029. 1029 was totally destroyed, but XGT-2 was repairable. When race officials tried to play anti-Ford politics and DQ XGT-2, Ford threatened to pull ALL the GT40s from the race (i.e, it would be a relatively uncompetitive race). Ford's ploy worked. Officials backed off and allowed XGT-2 to race, but only if Thompson was replaced. All the experienced GT40 drivers were already entered in LeMans. Brian Muir substituted for Thompson, but had NEVER driven a GT40 until he took TWO practice laps the day of the race! It was Graham Hill who drove XGT-2 when it had the early lead, but unfortunately there was unknown front suspension damage from the practice shunt that caused the car to drop out.

I'm putting the Hill/Muir #7 markings (with the flat black nose it had for the race) on my SPF GT40, and so the XGT2 plate was a must!

AlohaGT

This GT40 also ended up in position 31 and Did Not Finish due to front suspension problems. Its car number was "7"

The other Alan Mann Racing GT40 entry was in position 86, driven by Bob Johnson and Tom Payne as a reserve entry
