Car Racing Video Games (hopefully not useless crap)

Another thread titled "Useless crap you need right away" or something to that effect, there's mention made by several of you of PS3, GT4 and GT5 and other video game references. First, I know nothing about this subject. My only exposure to it was the last auto show I entered had this video game car racing competition set up where 6 or 8 folks were racing each other on these wide screen flat TVs. I was intriqued by the realism of the video/audio and the fun everyone was having with it.

At the end of the show, I went back to the booth and gave it a go myself. In a word I was AWFUL. I thought since I've raced motorcycles for many years and have a little experience driving cars, I'd be Okay. Wrong!

Long story short, the few minutes I spent driving and crashing, I really enjoyed. I think it was a PS3 but not sure, I know I was in a Playseat with all three (or 4 pedals), stick & paddle shifters, and there were a choice of circuits around the world and a bunch of cars.

The previous time I played video games was about 25 years ago when PacMan came out and the time before that was shortly after the Industrial Revolution when Pong appeared.

What do you guys think about the car racing video games? Which are the best games and the best boxes? It seems that a Playseat or similar with all accoutrements are a must, yes? What would your recommended list of equipment include?

Thanks.

Another question: do ANY of these games actually respond to their control inputs in REAL TIME? That is, when you turn the steering wheel NOW do the wheels on the game car turn NOW as well ... or is there STILL a lag in it?

I gave up on these darn games long ago because of the afore mentioned lag time. 'Response to commands was just too darn s-l-o-w and therefore too frustrating. (The ship I was stationed on responded quicker to commands from the bridge!)

Okay, finally something in my wheel house. Changed my oil once in my first car :eek...yikes...barely know which end of a screwdriver to use....renew my home warranty every year because I have no mechanical ability whatsoever. But videogames.....Bring it on. :lol

I am a PS3 guy because it is what I have had forever and I am loyal...plus Blu-ray is the HD-DVD format so you get a 2 for 1 DVD player and game system. How realistic it is really depends on how much you want to put into it. I have a friend in No Cal that had an amazing racing pod in his garage. Full shifting, racing pedals, sparco seat, big screen surround sound and best of all complete vibration/movement of the entire pod in response to your driving. For example, you go off the road into the grass, you feel it in the entire pod. The way he had the screen set up you had a feel for speed as well and the pod gave you subtle vibrations like you get at real triple digit speeds. It was the first time I realized that simulating real driving was possible. I was shocked how real it felt. The game I played in the pod was GT4.

To answer EP's question, the Gran Turismo games are very life like and respond real time to your input. Plus with Gran Turismo you can change the characteristics of the car in a real way, by adjusting every facet of the car like you would in real life. Not toy car tuner stuff, but real adjustments to your driving to create understeer, oversteer, gear ratios etc...basically it responds like a real car would to your input

I do not spend a lot of time on that because I just like to drive. The only complaint I have with the Gran Turismo games is no damage occurs to the cars. I like it when the damage occurs and affects how the car drives. The last Need for Speed game, Pro Street, had damaging affecting the cars performance in real time. That was cool. Plus they had a totally addictive drag racing mode. I got a Zonda to pull runs in the low 6's. (The best I could do with a 900hp GT was 9.14 :biggrin) Actually playing that game made me want the GT all the more because it was the best looking car in the game.

Bottom line, you can get near complete realism sans real life insurance bill if you are willing to spend the money. I have seen some racing pods go for 10K plus if you want the full effect. Personally, like most normal people, it never could replace real driving to me, but it can be one hell of a fun distraction. :cheers Plus if you wreck, no bills. :thumbsup

Aloha if you have any other direct questions feel free to PM me. I am a little older than 15. :rofl:lol:rofl Not that there is anything wrong with 15.

:cheers

Forza Motorsport 2 is the most realistic racing game that you can buy on a console. Forza Motorsport 3 will probably be out around the launch of GT5 if not a little later. Forza 2 has the Ford GT, Ford GT-40 MK-II, Shelby GT-500(new and old), Shelby Cobra 427, Shelby Series 1 and much more.

GT guy makes a great point about the number of different kinds of cars available to play around with on these games. There are a ton and all with real world customizing options. :cheers

My friend that has a racing pod sent me this link to a real life "battle" of a Supra versus a Murcielago LP640 when I started looking at getting a GT to remind me that money can buy exclusivity, but not always the top speed. How much you want to bet that the Lambo owner was on the phone to Jason Heffner the next day after the repeated pounding he took!! :rofl:rofl:rofl

Enjoy the link, it is an entertaining two minutes. http://4wheelsblog.com/released/humiliation-toyota-supra-vs-lamborghini-murcielago

First off

I own each of the major systems; and 1080p screens, and the said steering wheels.

Forza on xbox was the most realistic racing game on the system, But lacked replay and "fun" of Project Gotham 2.

Forza 2 promised much; and in my opinion, failed to deliver on 90% of the said improvements. Many accurately called the game "Forza 1.5" mostly improving only on the fact you could play it in higher resolution, and a few new cars. Gameplay is most definitely not realistic. This could be overlooked to some degree if the in-car camera views weren't so low to the track surface. All the tracks are too wide, and feel flat and smooth.

Additionally, my biggest complaint about Forza 2 is more of a Microsoft issue itself; there is no native Force Feedback support for steering wheels; the system that exists simulates the FFB based on the input into the dual shock deal inside the controller. It is not intuative, nore correct.

PGR 4 for 360 is better, even if more arcade-like. Perhaps because it doesn't aim at a simulation, I give it the nod here.

GT5 Prologue
No damage, and AI is anything but good. It has never been the forte of the GT series. I don't put it in for the AI, but for the most realistic console driving experience out there IF you have the Logitec G25 wheel (although, most logitec Force Feedback wheels are pretty good).

There areny many race cars, but the tracks available are the best out there; and the driving physics (with all aids turned off, and switched to professional) cannot be beat on a console.

Cars that are supposed to oversteer on-throttle do, cars that understeer on entry do, trail braking kicks the car into oversteer... different cars behave differently.

For the best and most realistic simulated driving...
You have to go to your PC; and to a company called Simbin. Their latest game is called GTR Evolution; which is the newest in the GTR series. Race street cars, race cars, download extra cars and tracks made by fans at sites like www.nogripracing.com; participate in simulated race championships with other users around the world, create fully custom setups based on testing pre-race.

Bar none, the best. Graphically, the only better looking game is GT5. It also supports every steering wheel that can be used on the PS3; including the GT5. Setups for PC simulations can run from budget racers to $30,000 setups with 6 axis hydrolics and a 4 point harness.

A word of warning, GTR is so realistic, it is made in conjunction with FIA GT race teams full input, and telemetry to get the most realism. The game is quite dificult; since a simulation cannot fully depict the "Seat of your pants" feeling; a force feedback brake system isn't cheap, and ABS braking will not yeild fast laptimes.

The best of the systems if you want to occasionally kill some time by yourself, or with friends, GT5 p and PS3 is the best option.
