You could certainly argue with some of his methods and how he treated people. I know I did.
But he loved the Yankee tradition and was totally passionate about winning.
Even though his sons took over recently, it's an end of an era.

I heard he had Billy Martin on his payroll till the day he died even though he was not working for him. Heard he also paid off one of his ex managers mortgages after he passed. It sounds as if he was very giving behind the scenes.
Steinbrenner brought a lot of money into the game of baseball! Both the owners and players have profited beyond belief based on his business model!

He also died in a year that the Estate tax is ZERO! Its always a very sad day when anyone dies, but he was giving even in death. His heirs got to inherit everything TAX FREE. I cant believe that the law was not changed before 2010 got there. Bet there will be several OLD Millionaires die this year.

Next year, it returns to 1996 Estate Tax levels - and no one is mentioning at all. Very shameful.

I saw this on the news... pretty shocking that there is no estate tax. Im suprised the government had this gap. I heard that the estate tax situation with Mr. Stienbrenner havent been completely sorted out yet... Does that mean that the Govt might stick their hand in his estate?

The 2010 Tax exemption expiring debate has been going around for a while. If you have had any estate planning this undoubtedly would have been discussed with your adviser at some point. The fact that no one within the congressional circles have touched this is because of political heated arguments. With that, this thread may turn into a hot political potato... so be cautious.

Frank (yelling): What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?!? He had 30 home runs, over 100 RBIs last year, he's got a rocket for an arm, you don't know what the hell you're doin'!!
Steinbrenner: Well, Buhner was a good prospect, no question about it.
But my baseball people love Ken Phelps' bat. They kept saying 'Ken Phelps , Ken Phelps'.
