What Is This?

I found this floating around under the console wrapped around the gear shift lever. It is very sticky on one side of the tape. I left it out. Any idea what it is for?

The ring that holds the rubber shift lever boot in?

But the shift boot has a rigid ring inside the boot itself. I'm missing something.

No, the ring sits in a V on the inner side of the boot. The tape comes loose after 10+ years.

Why is there tape on the ring?

To hold it in the boot when installing. Or reinstalling, as in our case.
