So I ordered a bunch of Kip Ewing carbon fiber parts and a custom made mac relocation kit from Shelby last week and got them all Thursday. Unwrapping them made it feel like Christmas; I was both excited to see them and nervous knowing that it all had to be installed. I have no mechanical skills at all, I can like to detail and drive the car, not work on them.
First to go in at 10pm Friday night were the steering wheel spokes. Easy and look great.
Second to go in at 10:15pm were the door rings. Popped the metal rings off and could not figure out how the carbon fiber ones attached. Shelby said if I had any questions to call him or Eric and they would walk me through it. I sent an email to Shelby and he responded right away. I also sent a text message to Eric and he responded right away. I called Eric and he walked me through. 10 minutes later both carbon fiber door rings were in and look great. I took pictures and sat in the car and admired the look.
Saturday was going to be the instrument panel install. While the kids were out of the house with the wife and toddler was sleeping FUBAR came over and showed me how to remove the panel and disconnect everything. I swapped out the gauges and FUBAR put the panel back in for me and everything worked. Panel looks amazing and couldn’t have done it without FUBAR (thanks again). We did get a chance to cruise around a little when the wife and kids came back. Good times. By the way, I have never met FUBAR before and he was more than happy to come over and help like every other forum member I have chatted with. This forum is a great resource.
Sunday while toddler was napping again, I stared work on removing the center tunnel and center trim piece to figure out how the new carbon fiber tunnel and mac relocation will go in. I had everything covered in tape. Followed the instructions I read on the forum (Thanks Shadowman) and everything came out as expected. The day got away from me and I found myself on the phone once more with Eric at 5pm talking about the process to put everything in. Starting around 9:30pm I began the process of installing the center tunnel. Got it in no problem. I realized that the Velcro pieces that hold the side panels in place didn’t fit. I didn’t want to remove the tunnel so enlarged the holes while installed. Little dirty, but got the shop vac out and cleaned it all up. Time to bolt in, same issue, needed to enlarge the bolt holes. Not a problem. Another shop vac and everything clean. Installed and looks great. Really. Put the exoticare shift bezel and painted knob all in and looks great.

Next was the mac relocation kit. Wired it all in and tested it and sounds amazing. Probably will never listen to it, but wanted it to work anyway. The biggest problem I had was putting the center trim piece back in. The bolts didn’t want to line up and I was frustrated. It was midnight and I gave it one last try. Got four of the six bolts in and was happy.

Very happy with everything. Thanks for everyone’s help. Now just waiting on carbon fiber A/C vents from Kip and carbon fiber door sills.

Wow, what an inspiration among the mechanically challenged! You did great, pictures look superb. And now you have at least 10 square inches more storage space in your interior, effectively doubling it! Really excellent job there. I too had a difficult time realigning the bolt holes in the firewall to reinstall Mac unit. (I was doing a significant interior detail.) Hope you're enjoying the car even more, with a sense of accomplishment thrown in as a bonus.

Thanks for your business on the carbon fiber parts and glad we could help you with installation. Looks like all turned out great. We are here to help any time. :)

Wow, GREAT job!!! And it sure does make the interior look even more amazing!!!

And for Hudson's quote shown below, I almost snorted my coffee and I'm still laughing! Too funny.

Looks sharp. Great install.

Looks very nice. Any glare from the CF when the sun hits it?

Not sure on the glare. Finished it early this morning, covered it and went to bed. If it's nice this weekend I'll take it out and play. I did enjoy sitting in it last night in the garage (car not on), listening to music and just looking how magnificent everything looks. Very happy with everything.

Project 321, need the carbon door sills and coolant caps please.

Shelby, I'll be sending the air bag this week.

Gorgeous!!

Even better when DIY!!!

That's a helluva weeekend project. Looks great!

Any tips on how to deal with the center trim/firewall bolt alignment? The mac relocate is my next warm day project.

A razor to trim some of the insulation/sound deadening material helps. I used nails in the holes to line everything up. Took one nail out and shoved the bolt in. Trial and error and time got it to work. That was the most frustrating part of everything. 4 of the 6 bolts are in. The bottom bolt next to the speaker cannot be seen or reached. I installed the speaker before the trim piece. The bottom bolt by the amp will not be installed because of how the wires come out of the amp. That part of the trim piece sticks out slightly, but not enough to notice. The speaker was difficult too, just because I have big hands and it was difficult to get my hand in the speaker to turn the bolt. Wear gloves so your hands dont get all cut up; mine look like I got into a fight with a cat. Also, you may want to take an advil so you are not sore in the morning from all the bending and weird positions you contort into for leverage.

I was thinking of taking the seats out. Would that eliminate the contortions?

I would think that would help. Let me tell you where it will be great, when screwing in the speaker to the box.

Great! Thanks for the tips! :cheers

It all looks great. The dash looks especially professional IMHO. They rest of the CF looks badass! Congrats on the upgrades, fantastic looking GT!

You didn't let Fubar into the engine compartment did you? Better check for missing parts.

It's more efficient that way.

What a fun project! For someone who doesn't work on cars, you sure did a great job! :thumbsup

Thanks for all the kind words; I am really happy with how it turned out. Now I have to put some miles on it and make sure nothing falls apart.

FUBAR was such a big help except he kept complaining about sliding around in the seat from all the Armor All I used. None of the tape we used to protect the leather would stick because of it either. I have some serious issues, seriously.

Now what's next to work on?

Car looks great, congrats on a job well done.
