220MPH, in 1967 with just a regular old 427FE. Gurney is leading by 32 miles at 4 hours left to go. I don't think there will ever be anything that will compare to what these "hotrodders from California" accomplished. Like him or not, Shelby collected a bunch of guys that had nothing to lose and everything to win and they did.
Yeah, 220 on 1967 TIRES! Talk about serious stones.
BTW, there was a really nice replica of the Mk IV @ Road America last year, and I believe it will be there again this summer (vintage event). I don't know who's car it is, but it is something.
How true. I almost bought a set of Goodyear Billboards for the Cobra. Gurney, Bondurant, all those guys ran those tires on the Cobras at close to 200MPH. I looked at them and the whole tire wasn't much more than the inner tubes our folks around her run on the local river. Touch the sidewall on a curb and it's gonna pop. Yep, brass ones or a lot of faith in a higher power.

It was probably Tom Malloy's Mark IV, J-11. It's not a replica, but was an unfinished Mark IV, which was completed later. Here's a video interview of the car at Riverside International Raceway Museum:

Much like Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier...those guys were unbelievable. Met Mr. Bondurant 20 years ago at his driving school, he was amazing..
