I thought shipping anything considered a liquid is not legal. Regardless, that is a lot of $ for a battery core.

Actually, Optimas are not gel batteries. They use conventional liquid, but there are absorbent fiberglass mats between the plates, and the acid is contained in this matting. Thus there is no "loose" electrolyte to leak out. Batteries like this are called AGM (for absorbent glass mat) or starved electrolyte batteries, and they are classified as "leakproof" and are shippable by normal methods. I actually recently bought one mailorder for my Miata (I know, I'm a pussy!) from these guys: http://www.1st-optima-batteries.com/ and was very happy with their service.

Not a verry good deal considering you can buy a brand new one from Ford drop shipped in for free from the Optima factory for $138.00. Don't have to worry about age.

Is ours an Optima, Group 25, Red Top?

My OEM Optima still running strong.

What are you guys replacing them with? Odyssey batteries? Any other recommendations? Or are a lot of people sticking with the Optima?

+1

the technology was developed for military vehicles. The battery will still work after a round has gone through it!!! don't ask me how I know this. :bored

I switched all my other batteries to Odessey. In the cars, they weigh less with the same cranking amps and in my boat they hold up to the rough the best and have an expected life of 8-10 years. The die hards lasted 2 years.

One note; Odessey recommended an accumate charger/maintainer and they definitely have 2 settings; 1 for AGM and 1 for lead acid. I saw in the Optima link they said the chargers are all OK.

Accumate chargers;

EDIT; I looked up Accumate and it appears they have deleted the switch on the unit to differentiate between lead acid and AGM. :confused

Either way, UPS basis all car batteries as HAZMAT material. even though it may get shipped ground, it ( could ) still end up going by air to a hub.
