Word on the streets is that the 500 in GT500 is going to represent more than just a nod to history. Some of us *cough cough* have been arguing vehemently that the wink wink SVT estimates of ~475 were a major lowball for months (see svtperformance's GT500 section), and now rags like Motor Trend are saying it.

A 500+ horse stock pony car with a stout stick axle is mighty attractive as a drag racer no? Especially if you knock a few hundred pounds off by swapping out the block for the GT piece...

Should be a mightly interesting 06/07 with a very high powered GT500, the return of the Camaro, and a new challenger!

Well there are still a lot of rumors...latest I heard is that they are getting real risky with the tunes on the prototypes to get over 500 hp. That has to be false though with what they have to work with on that DOHC longblock...I dunno how they are going to get away with sandbaggin it when all the manufacturers are suposedly on this SAE thing now:confused

It better have a true 500+ hp at the crank; I don't care if it's rated by Ford at 500 or not. The 03/04 had a real 425 at the crank with 9-10 PSI. As of right now the GT500 is suppost to have 11-12 psi stock, the heads are way better than the 03/04, and it has another 40+ CID...

When I saw the car last March/April the dyno sheets were indicating 500+++ horsepower. Some very close to the GT's output. So who knows what it will really have until dynoed as a production car. Looks exceptionally good in darker not lighter colors IMO.

Final Certification Testing of the Shelby GT 500's 5.4L V8 shows it will produce 500 HP and an amazing 480 lb.-ft. of torque. 25 more HP than estimated. A true GT 500.
