Those with good memories might recall that earlier in the year Richard Hammond, one of the co-presenters of the UK's top TV car programme Top Gear, nearly paid the ultimate price in his quest to entertain us. He was driving a jet-powered dragster and either something broke or he simply lost control at around 300mph. He was in a coma for two weeks and doctors feared that if he pulled through he would be severely brain damaged.
Well, not only did he pull through but he's about to get back to work and seems almost totally unscathed by the accident. According to fellow presenter Jeremy Clarkson, his lack of brain damage only goes to show there was nothing there in the first place...
Richard was on a TV chat show last night (Friday) talking about the accident and his recovery. He says the last thing he remembers is the dragster going out of control. "I thought 'oh bugger'. The next thing I knew it was two weeks later and I woke up in hospital."
Amazingly there's not a scratch on him. "Yes, it's a shame there's not a mark on me. I'd hoped my wife Mindy might have put a knife down my face while I was asleep: I quite fancy having a duelling scar," he said. His sense of humour has also been untouched by the crash.
His says his short term memory is still not 100 per cent, but it's getting better all the time... but he's a little worried that Mindy might be taking advantage. She says: "But darling, you always used to do the washing up after every meal..."
The only real problem, it seems, is that he's only allowed a weak beer every now and again, and nothing stronger. He starts filming for the next series of Top Gear in January with broadcasts starting in February.
One very lucky guy.
