Need A Corvette C2 Expert

I’m looking to purchase a 1967 Corvette Sting Ray Roadster L71 427/435HP that is located in Toronto but need to find a C2 expert to help me with valuing the car and finding someone to do an inspection. Is there a Forum member who knows these cars really well or can recommend someone who does?

"Actually the L71 is nothing more than the 1966 L72 with tri-power. The L88 is a completely different animal. But for the "IT" sticker on the valve covers and externally with the orange paint they are almost identical. However thats where it stops. The differences are aluminum heads, 12.5-1 compression forged pistons with special full floating pink rods, a 540/560 solid lifter cam, open plenum dual plane intake, and a 850 Holley carb with a TI ignition developed close to 600 HP with headers in the first series of L88`s in early 1967." -

I had always read that GM advertised the L88 at 430, and the L89 at 435, so only people " in the know" would select the L 88

edit: just realized the OP said he was looking at an L71, and I mentioned the L89. The L89 was just the L71 with aluminum heads, though, so same difference. My point being, the horsepower rating of the L88 obviously didn't tell the whole story.

They only made 20 L88s in 1967, so you had to be "Special" to get one.

Indeed. I am quite familiar with the rarity of the L88. A friend's former father-in-law has one.
 
There can be only one, the ZL1 that is!

:lol The guy I mentioned who has an L88 is from Powell, WY. I went to medical school with his former son-in-law. Not a pretty break-up between my friend and his daughter. I'm in no position to recommend him, if he even remembers me.

I DO know of a local guy here in Sioux Falls who fancies himself a "corvette-ologist". He may be a resource for the OP. I think he may inspect/appraise vintage 'vettes. Here is his info:

I have collected 67 435 Corvettes for many years. They are awesome cars but there are many fakes around so be careful. There are great cars out there too but one needs to know where to find them. PM me if you like and I will be happy to assist you.

Was the L88 that you know about a 1967 model? If so what color and body style was it?

Sorry, I don't recall. This was back in 1998. I'm not really into GMs so much, I just thought it was cool that somebody I was somewhat acquainted with had an L88.

My original point was just that pretty much everybody who was into muscle cars at one point or another knows about the legendary L88, and heard stories about how L88s were given very misleading horsepower ratings, compared to the much more "pedestrian" 427's that came with higher horsepower ratings (435 vs 430). If I also recall correctly, the 430 hp figure for the L88 was technically correct, for the low rpm at which they were rating it.

Hence, my joking comment to Ralphie about the OP perhaps not wanting the "lesser" L88.
 
No problem, my guess is that the L88 that you saw was a 68 or 69 like the one in the front. They made 80 and 116 respectively those years vs. only 20 67s.

I agree that they are a completely different animal vs. the 435 hp cars.

More than likely then, yes. I didn't realize that they made as many L88s as they did! Still rare, obviously, but I would have guessed a lower production number than that.

Are those your cars? Very nice! Is the near red car in the photo a genuine L88, then?

Yes, they are mine. The car in front is a genuine L88. It still has its original drivetrain and no hit body which very few remaining cars still have. I feel very fortunate to own it.
 
Please feel free PM'ing me. I've been around Corvettes and saturated within the hobby since I was born. Like many have mentioned - be careful! Irony has it, it's a great time to buy one. The market is soft.
