Major Step for Driverless Cars

Pencils, slide rules, mechanical sharpeners. Let me add this from my college days. Anyone remember the memorable name?

They are the eraser pads used in drafting class. I don't remember the nickname.

I still have my Post slide rule.

THey were called "Scum-ex bags." It was a brand name. Although we frequently shortened it to "Scumbags." They also were great fun to lob at each other, since they left a dust print on the guy you hit--sort of an early version of paintball...

The first driverless shuttle in Vegas. FAIL! It didn't get much more than an hour before it crashed

Interesting that the article provides an opinion on driverless cars from Danica Patrick..

The shuttle was innocent!! It got backed into by a Semi.

Now I do find fault, it couldn't back up out of the way. I wonder if it sounded the warning horn. Hard to believe but there hauling passengers in that rig already.

I thought of that too. The answer to both is a RESOUNDING NO! Yes, the shuttle saw the truck, and came to a screeching halt and then sat there like a lump of coal. It took no evasive maneuver (like backing up) nor did it do what any driver would have done; Lay on the horn!

The news last night had a picture - the damage was minor, just looked like a crunched fiberglass panel. Truck driver was cited.

Here's a first-person account

Yep, it should be able to back up. Or honk the horn. :)
