...that invented "star shield". Here's why.

I took a few days off this week and so today I decided to drive the Lotus a bit up the highway just to get out of town. Running down I44, I was passing a semi when one of his tires blew out .... just a few feet in front of the car. :willy Pieces of tire everywhere, a car right behind me so there was no slowing down and no where to dodge. :ack So basically, I just had to take it. One large piece of tread up on the hood another under the car... the one under the car knocked out a naca duct (which I recovered) the one up on the hood rode there until I got to the side of the road (about a mile).

Really expecting a ton of damage... I found none other than the duct (which just pops in and out ... and is already back in the car.. as it was hanging in the opening of the body pan) and a black mark on the star shield. I stopped off at the nearest Orielly's and got some tar remover ... off came the mark.:thumbsup

Not a mark on the paint ... not a cut in the shield. Christ that stuff is tough!!!! Well worth the money ....:bow :bow :bow :bow

What's a star shield?

Its a 3M product . a film bra that covers the front of the car, a pillars, and any where else you want to put it. Some people put it on tier windshields too in a areas with alot of blowing sand and such.

incredible stuff.....

Steve, I was alwyas one that said - it's not worth the price - you can paint the car for same or equal.... After reading your story, you might of change my mind.

While the starshield on the Lotus is 3M, and they all come with it, they are also know for the orange peel look. They are other brands and if you search the forum you can find them.

Hmmmmm, might of changes my mind. Maybe I'll tint the windows to. If I go al the way I can obtain the full body condom effect!:lol

I'll say this .... I always said I can touch up paint, detail the car, and as long as its not dented it will look like new. BUT. after FEELING the impact of the debris on the car and under it. I KNEW that the front air dam was cracked. I knew it!. I hit that stuff hard enough it felt like I was running off the road.....

Not a scratch. It has me wondering if it (the star shield) didn't keep the bodywork from flexing to the point of cracking ... probably not ... but it is a question that has me asking why did it not? crack that is.

As far as orange peel. nope ... I think it depends on the jerk applying it.:biggrin Some colors show the film more than others. Not all Lotus come with star shield its a 1000.00 option.

As you can tell ... now I am a believer. It worked for me.

I know atleast one of my GT's will get the film on it. The other will not.

Ok for the record ... I am now officially looking for an all yellow GT. just FYI ... so if anyone sees one for sale ...pm me.

thanks
Steve

you guys might want to do the 3m thing to the outter lower rear bumper if doing it yourself or have the store do for you, if you look the rear tires throw up gravel onto that area and it cant be seen except from underside. I have seen some cars that are beat up pretty good there.
