Gee, aren't unions wonderful?
I hope they have a hiring fair, replace the workers, and fire everyone who went on strike. Maybe the teachers union could be next!

Let's fire all of them and have the Chevy's and Ford's manufacturing plants re-open in China.:lol:lol Better yet, we can fire them workers and re-open the facilities with Green Card holders and rename the facilities after Bush:thumbsup:thumbsup, just like after firing the Air Traffic controllers and renaming a big airport. :frown
I think all Unions should strike at once and see how y'all get along without us.

Such bitterness :eek The biggest problem with employees of companies like GM & Ford is the us against them mentality. There is no way the current 90.000 +or- employees GM has can support the 330,000 or so retirees and spouses that now exist. Maybe the best thing would be for both to file bankruptcy and dump those ridiculous contracts that shouldn't have been passed out in the first place.

can agree totally with that approach to solve the problem of paying for promises that become difficult to maintain. It should work short term. But IMO it fails to address the root cause of the situation and I have to wonder how future blue collar employees would view an employer as untrustworthy. Break a promise today for those who went before me, why should I work for you today, kind of thing. Bring back tariffs on the imports and all will be well again. Without the courage to strike, collectively against an employer, the average worker doesn't stand a chance but that of an indentured servant. At the same time, the fine line of pushing too far might cause a company to fold its tent; and then so much for the "strike" idea. Lose Lose. Too much greed on one side, to much laziness and security on the other. A perfect balance may be impossible, but some agreement will most likely be reached:some will like it, others will not. But life goes on, with or without Accufab Half-Shaft replacement parts. Without this great forum, life might not.:cheers

Of coarse every situation is different, but in general, when all the facts and figures are in, nobody really wins in a strike situation, "net, net, net". Everybody seems to loose. Businesses, employees, customers, government (taxes lost) the whole 9 yards. Not to mention the bad vibes all 'round that strikes create. IMHO they ought to be avoided like the plague when a particular business is in a major league slump. One would think it should be a primary strike stratagy to ensure there'd be a job left to come back TO when the strike was over.

Just watched the news here in Detroit. Several union members speaking about how they expect a contract with...
No Decrease in Heath Care or co-pay increases
and...an increase in hourly rate, a signing bonus (to ratify the contract) and job security guarantees...go figure...
I predict the UAW will soon get what they really want.....THE 'NO DAY WORK WEEK'. Too bad folks are so short sighted....I lived in Aliquippa Pa and Pittsburgh Pa when the United Steelworkers got the same deal.

I read a bunch of auto boards last night. Every single one noted from summer parts pullers to seasonsed line guys that the union guys were mostly sleeping among the fenders or naming names to the goons. Sounds like a page out of USSR gulag.
Guranteed employment is not ulike working for the Government.
Anyone who has been to a DMV or postal window knows how motivated those "workers" are.
The 12-15,000 thousand idled workers in job banks are a travesty. The only thing worse than that is the "Sales Bank" Chrysler used before Iacocoa.

Andy - you got it right!
I believe that Gettlefinger knows the score and that the price to settle this contract to the membership will be high. The gap in competitivenss is so large, he can't 'sell' the necessary adjustments to the membership outright. The only way to bring membership expectations in line with reality, is for the deal to play out over a strike. If GM actually has agreement w/VEBA portion, the job guarantees issue will go away after a protracted strike (education). Oherwise, as you say, it will be "lights off manufacturing" in the US.

It would be nice ... maybe they think they're congressmen. Why did I just feel my tax bill rise? Oh no thats just the sticker on the new vette I was thinking about getting ... maybe I'll just go find another GT instead at the end of the day it might just be a better bargain.

That was the uneasy feeling of the Democrats coming.
I think Aerosmith said it best in a song...."Eat the rich".
The only problem with the Dem's definition of 'rich' is that it includes anybody not on welfare...because it's all YOUR (collective) fault. I still can't get my arms around Nancy Pelosi and her remarks that corporate profits need to be taxed at 100%.
Note: I caught one of those court tv shows (Judge Joe Brown I think) a few years back. I just can't get over a statement made by a defendant when asked who she worked for. Her reply was, "I work for the government!" ...with all the attitude and conviction one could muster. She then followed that up with..."I'm on welfare!" She was so proud.
